Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Yeah, and Ebert mentions that all of his nun teachers were "kind and dedicated" -- well, basically like Sister James. But the principal scared him. No doubt. He also mentions that they had to write JMJ for Jesus, Mary, Joseph. I'd never heard of that before, but it's awesome.

If you want to check out a really funny and quick read about Catholic school in 1950s-60s, check out The Last Catholic in America. There were parts I really laughed out loud, like when he has a crush on the Virgin Mary.

I've been seeing advertisements for the uncut version of Notorious. I need to look for that next time.

I had to do the whole JMJ thing. It was one of the first things that never sat right with me.

Now that would be a good type of comedy.

Whenever I see that on a recent release list I wonder if the Hitchcock move was remade.

Rescue Dawn. Not very impressed. Thought Bale had to push the character out of him. Ho-hum 5.5/10

Doubt. Meryl Streep once again shows why she is a great actress. Philip Seymour Hoffman I thought would have had a better performance. Maybe going in I had my expectations too high with both of these performers in it. Would still watch again. 7/10

Adventureland. Did Michael Cera do a voice over? Ryan Reynolds didn't have much of a part. Good Gen-X movie though. 7/10

Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Dramatic ending. Something seemed to be lacking for me in it though. Having said that, 8/10

Taking Chance. Very moving anti-war movie. One instance that sticks out with me the most is at the ticket counter. I don't want to say too much but, I have had those very same feelings and reactions, and sometimes some things are unneeded and unwanted. 9/10

Downfall. Amazing film. Must watch for everyone. 9.5/10

I will be honest, I came into it expecting a metaphor on faith.
I'll take him at his word about the point, because he himself wrote the introduction to the play and he seemed more concerned with the concept of doubt as a whole than doubt pertaining to any specific point. I think doubt about faith is an element of it, but I just don't think that was the whole point he was making. I think it was more than doubt regarding whether or not the priest was guilty, and I think it can be more significant than that even without doubts regarding faith being the main point.
A lot of life's decisions are filled with doubt, often times you don't know if you made the right choice, and doubt can create strong inner conflict. What's right, what's wrong, can wrong sometimes be justified, etc.

My wife and I watched Doubt on Monday night. She went to Catholic school here in Baltimore about the same time the movie depicts. She said it was exactly the way the movie shows it to be. To make it even worse, the nuns usually picked on the smallest girls and would beat the hell out of them. Maryland has a large population of Catholics and there are schools everywhere, and I've heard that same story from many people who went through that. Today Catholic schools are just as popular because it's a way for people to keep their kids out of public school. I gave Doubt 8 stars out of 10.

I liked it. It was hard to watch though because it was so "real" and with that realness came a very slow pace.

Liked it but I thought the trailer gave the movie away. All the good lines were in it.

Still need to see that.

Been meaning to rent that for a long while. Long while.
