The drum thing is kind of un-cool to ME but this generation is all about electronics. But for the first couple months he'll just be hitting a practice pad anyways.

I have a snare drum, bell kit, keyboard, and 2 guitars for my flighty ass children.

Yeah. We've done all of those with cheap starter sets which they've of course beat to hell. Now that they're officially getting lessons, these will be the first "real" instruments they get which they're to treat properly.

20 years from now when reminiscing about his first kit, don't make it be electric.
I like noise though, so my opinion is skewed. |

I find electric guitar a lot easier to play and you don't even have to plug in to practice on it. I often don't.

Electric is easier to play. I would start him out on something in the Squier line.

Keith Urban makes an acoustic guitar designed to be easy on the fingers for beginners.

You can buy a complete set of practice pads for a tradition drum kit. That allows your kid to play and not interrupt anyone or when time allows they can play without the pads. To me as a drummer an electric set plays completely different. If its something they really want to do don't hesitate to buy a kit with quality hardware.

Both are fine, I m o.
Electric guitar is a little easier on the fingers , because the guage of the strings is lighter plus you can get headphones....you can at clean ( acoustic sound) or distorted....so there are more sound options. With drums you really don't need too much to start....bass, snare, tom , high hat and crash I think electric is cool because of different sounds and headphones.....and built in metronomes and stuff like that..... Good on you for showing your kids the beauty of music!
