Third Stroud's Chicken Restaurant Coming to South OP

My nipples explode with delight...this is close enough for lunch from where I work. Coming in June!

The other two locations are Fairway, KS near the Plaza and North of the River.

Sides would magically appear just as you emptied a bowl. Heaven on earth. Only place I felt the urge to tip more than I paid for the meal. Probably ate there 8-10 times and it was always stellar. The only service I've ever seen to rival it was Tony's on The Hill, only this was a blue collar $10 meal, not a hoi polloi $75-100 affair.

Been to North Side and Plaza locations and the food was similarly good.

There was a place in Lenexa that tried to copy them [K.T. Fryers, IIRC, started by a Stroud's partner], they had the formula down, but the building caught fire and they never re-opened. Ate there 3-4 times.

There was a place at Kansas Raceway that tried as well, but their service was for SHIT!! Too bad, really good food, really shitty service. So bad that grandma decreed 'never again.' Ate there once. Double tragedy, as grandma lived at <<1/4.mi from the place in Lenexa that burned down as well, like 3 blocks up and 2 over.

I'm not a big fan of fried chicken overall, can't stand franchise chicken unless it's hot enough to burn the roof of your mouth. It's just so greasy after a second or two. But Strouds is probably my favorite dining destination of all time. What they bring out isn't greasy, it's explosively moist and tender, perfectly seasoned. Grab a breast off the top of a fresh stack and dig in, and you'll simultaneously shoot steam all over your face, and spray chicken juiciness all over your plate, and it's crisp and spiced [not spicy, think 11 herbs and spices, only legit and made with love by momma], and the green BEANS, and the pot'n'gravy, just filled with chicken essence and perfect spicing.

The cinnamon rolls are almost an afterthought, but such a thoughtful afterthought.

Put it this way, if I had my choice between a sampling of all my favorite KC BBQ, ribs from here, sammich from there, fries from over there, and Strouds under the bridge one last time, Strouds IT IS!!

Loved the place under the bridge. The bartender was a good friend of mine.

I talked up Strouds for weeks leading up to taking my wife to the one under the bridge. What you describe was nothing like what we experienced. Nothing was awful about our experience but nothing was worth going back for either. So we never did. Still haven't. Like a decade later, we haven't returned to Strouds. I'm not even mad about it. It's just frustrating that everybody else loved it for cool reasons and I never saw any of those reasons manifest themselves during our visit.

My Wife and I hit the one in Fairway when they first opened (geezz what a mess and the food was terrible) and haven't been back since. Been to the one up North a time or two - wasn't bad at all.

That place over in Shawnee (KT Friars) beat the hell out of Strouds all day long and twice on Sunday. Damned shame it burned down.

It is bland. Family eats there in the Northland. Standard home style chicken. If you think it is amazing your family sucks at cooking. I would say come to our cookouts, but that would be too good of a treat for you.

I could be spoiled also with cooks in our family.

The breading is pretty amazing. But as someone on the show pointed out wen No Reservations came to KC - "imagine if Strouds had good chicken?". They could definitely step into the 21st century and stop buying hormone-pumped chicken from factory farms - probably in Arkansas somewhere. ARKANSAS!

I agree that Stroud's chicken is bland. Pan fried in a cast iron skillet is a just a bunch of shit. They only spices Stroud's uses is salt and pepper and their lack of flavor really shows. The sad thing is I can get better tasting fried chicken from a grocery store.

Both Corner Cafe and Go Chicken Go have plus chicken. It's been a bit since I've eaten Stroud's, Corner Cafe may actually have better chicken.

It's good. Half order of gizzards with extra "Go" sauce is the standard order. If the word "gizzards" scares you get over it and try them anyway, and join those of us who share this addiction.
