Chicago police commander shot to death at Thompson Center in Loop

This happened today, directly across the street from my office.

Chicago police commander shot to death at Thompson Center in Loop

A high-ranking Chicago police officer died after he was shot Tuesday afternoon while assisting a tactical team responding to a robbery at the Thompson Center, sources said.

The officer, identified as a commander, was shot a little before 2 p.m., according to chief Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and has died, sources said.

Guglielmi would not confirm the death or identify the officer.

Sources said a suspect was arrested and taken to Area Central police headquarters.

Noreen Janko said she was walking back to her office building across the street from the Thompson Center when she heard shots.

“I heard the gunshots go off, about five shots, and then the stairs there to the pedway, I think they have the guy cornered because they lock those doors down there,” Janko said. “So they took him with shackles and then they put him in the squad. Then the ambulance came, about five minutes (later) they brought out a guy who was shot. He was on the stretcher, there was blood and they were doing (CPR).

“I was walking down the street and I heard ‘pop pop pop pop pop,’ ” Janko said. “And I said to the girl next to me, ‘Is that what I think it is?’ And she said ‘Yep.’ I said ‘Aw geez.’ And everybody is scurrying all over and I see the police head to the stairs there. There’s a stairwell there. And it goes downstairs. I heard that the door is locked there. It used to be a pedway, but now, for security reasons they have it locked.”

“Anyway, so they had him cornered and eventually they brought him up the stairs and put him in the squad,” Janko said.

As officers gathered at Northwestern, Supt. Eddie Johnson sent out an email to members of his department: "Today, our department suffered a tragedy that it is difficult to comprehend. This afternoon, a CPD commander was shot while assisting fellow officers. Information is still coming in at this time, but I wanted you to know as soon as possible. We will provide additional details as they come. Please take the time to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Stay safe."

Outside the emergency room entrance, about a dozen plainclothes officers gathered in the middle of Erie Street. A number of marked and unmarked police and Chicago Fire Department vehicles, some of them with emergency lights flashing, were parked outside.

A uniformed officer hugged another officer in the middle of the street.

At the scene of the shooting, officers stretched crime tape from City Hall to the Thompson Center. A police command van arrived at 2:25 p.m.

Federal agents and Illinois state police joined Chicago detectives. Onlookers crowded the corners, and people at times had to dodge falling ice. Many workers said they could not get back into the buildings.

This was a very well known and respected officer. Precinct commander, did lots of charity work and good things for the community.

I went downstairs about an hour and a half after it happened and there were still cops everywhere. Normally when I see them in the area working a security detail (there are lots of protests in this area), they are very passive and detached, even when people are ****ing with them. But they were visibly angry today.

I don't need to point out that Chicago is a city with the some of the strictest gun laws along with the highest murder rates in the USA...but I will anyway.

Probably because a cop was killed.
We don't know him, we don't live there. We're all impressed that you are finally moved by someone's death instead of cheering when people get brain cancer.
Why are you so intent on continuing to babble on about this? Is there no one local to whom you can prattle on?

I get it now...the whole point of the thread was just to be a launching pad for a RW circle jerk. Chicago! Thanks, Obama! He lived there!

They're actually not as strict as you think. Scary black rifles are banned in Chicago, but not handguns. Also, Illinois is a "will issue" state for concealed carry, as opposed to other shitholes like New York and Kalifornia, which are "may issue." The difference is in a "will issue" state the burden is on the state to prove you can't carry, while in a "may issue" state the burden is on the applicant to prove that he needs to carry (and that whole Constitutional rights thing doesn't count). It's also a giant pain in the ass to buy a gun in places like New York, while in Illinois you just have to have a firearm owner ID card (which they will give to anybody without a record), submit to a background check, and go through the waiting period (three days for handguns, one day for rifles/shotguns).

I can (and do) legally carry a pistol in Chicago. The only way that happens in New York or Los Angeles is if I'm rich, connected, or both.

Of course, I assume the killer in this instance is probably another shitbag career criminal with an illegal/stolen gun. Probably been in and out of jail a dozen times. Generally one doesn't start their criminal career by hosing a cop.

Honestly didn't think an average citizen could hold a CCW licence in Chicago. Good to know law abiding citizens could defend themselves.

Well, they do make it difficult and expensive. The FOID is like $5 or $10, but the application cost for CC is over $100. You also have to complete 16 hours of training from a recognized firearms instructor before your application is approved, so add at least another couple of hundred dollars to the bill. The courses are conducted at gun ranges, and while there are numerous ranges in the suburbs, there are exactly zero in the city itself.

So say you're poor and live in a shitty neighborhood in Chicago, and decide you want to get a gun and carry it. First you get the FOID, then you have to purchase the gun, along with magazines, a holster and bullets (probably out in the burbs, since most n00bs won't know about getting stuff online), then you have apply for the CC permit, get training out in the burbs, and then wait a couple of months for everything to be processed. And if you're responsible, you'll want to practice occasionally, which means more trips to the burbs.

For somebody barely scraping by, this probably isn't going to happen.

And they know it.

Suspect was 44 years old. Extensive criminal record. From the south side. Was wearing body armor. Not identified yet because he hasn't been charged at this point.

Getting this from the local news.

My ex sister in law and her husband of many years, school teachers both... were basically forced to flee with their kids to Indiana after their home in a 'good' Chicago neighborhood was burglarized 3 times in 2 years

Its such a pathetic shithole up there, thanks Democrats!
