Dopers will not like this opinion.

Last week marked the fifth anniversary of Colorado's decision to sanction the world's first anything-goes commercial pot trade.

Five years later, we remain an embarrassing cautionary tale.

Visitors to Colorado remark about a new agricultural smell, the wafting odor of pot as they drive near warehouse grow operations along Denver freeways. Residential neighborhoods throughout Colorado Springs reek of marijuana, as producers fill rental homes with plants.

Five years of retail pot coincide with five years of a homelessness growth rate that ranks among the highest rates in the country. Directors of homeless shelters, and people who live on the streets, tell us homeless substance abusers migrate here for easy access to pot.

Five years of Big Marijuana ushered in a doubling in the number of drivers involved in fatal crashes who tested positive for marijuana, based on research by the pro-legalization Denver Post.

Five years of commercial pot have been five years of more marijuana in schools than teachers and administrators ever feared.

"An investigation by Education News Colorado, Solutions and the I-News Network shows drug violations reported by Colorado's K-12 schools have increased 45 percent in the past four years, even as the combined number of all other violations has fallen," explains an expose on escalating pot use in schools by Rocky Mountain PBS in late 2016.

The investigation found an increase in high school drug violations of 71 percent since legalization. School suspensions for drugs increased 45 percent.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health found Colorado ranks first in the country for marijuana use among teens, scoring well above the national average.

The only good news to celebrate on this anniversary is the dawn of another organization to push back against Big Marijuana's threat to kids, teens and young adults.

The Marijuana Accountability Coalition formed Nov. 6 in Denver and will establish satellites throughout the state. It resulted from discussions among recovery professionals, parents, physicians and others concerned with the long-term effects of a commercial industry profiteering off of substance abuse.

"It's one thing to decriminalize marijuana, it's an entirely different thing to legalize an industry that has commercialized a drug that is devastating our kids and devastating whole communities," said coalition founder Justin Luke Riley. "Coloradans need to know, other states need to know, that Colorado is suffering from massive normalization and commercialization of this drug which has resulted in Colorado being the number one state for youth drug use in the country. Kids are being expelled at higher rates, and more road deaths tied to pot have resulted since legalization."

Commercial pot's five-year anniversary is an odious occasion for those who want safer streets, healthier kids and less suffering associated with substance abuse. Experts say the worst effects of widespread pot use will culminate over decades. If so, we can only imagine the somber nature of Big Marijuana's 25th birthday.

I am NOT an expert, but am well informed, by experts.

I have had several conversations with friends (MD/Psychiatrists) who all 3 are licensed to practice in IL state prisons and one who testifies in state courts on both sides of the issue. What shared with me is what I am using along with printed data just like that that has been published for a year.

One of the Dr's is a Forensic Psychiatrist and is very knowledgeable on the subject. It was explained to me that THC peaks in the blood, by being introduced though the lungs it peaks quickly and holds for a bit then quickly drops back to levels that are similar to someone who may have smoked days before. He mentioned edibles because eaten will enter the blood slower but once in the bloodstream it is eliminated from the blood in the same manner.

After they explained all the bad shit that was happening to my body by smoking pot, they explained that heavy, and especially binge drinking was worse. Getting caught for DUI/alcohol was easy for the cops as it to has to wear off slowly, but getting a positive blood test for THC is very hard unless you just smoked and they did a blood test quickly as the results do not result in conclusive results after a certain time frame. In my case he stated 2-3 hours.

FYI You don't want to drive through IL(or other states) with a pot conviction on your record and show signs of being impaired/stoned. You will be in a medical facility dropping blood, your car will get towed and possibly searched, plus...You will get stuck with the bills even if your active THC is below or is at a non-measurable level. Oh, and if you don't pass the pre-screen, they can hold restrict your freedom (including your car) until test results are final.

We tested a guy who was cut on the hand on the job (for Work comp. requirements as per policy )and he was at .16 BAC and appeared more sober than me after having a beer at lunch.

Tolerance is probably not a defense against a DUI but the way the law reads, you must appear and test over the limit if that answers your question.
A few points here

1. Tolerance works both ways. I knew people in my youth that could smoke a sandwich baggie and go on about their day.

2. I asked if this study took that into account. The comparison was 1 glass of wine (I substituted beer) vs. 1 joint. Unless you weigh like nothing lbs. one beer ain't gonna get ya to .08. (and even if somehow it would, it's not even where I was going)

3. I don't remember asking about the law, I was pointing at the nonsense of 1 drink (just to keep it simple) vs. 1 joint.

4. Nobody took away your stoner card,. You can smoke till the cows come home for all I care. Why the post after post after post

I am not A MO voter but support the thought, but it's been 2 years gathering about 1/2 of the signatures they need. I am afraid that this is more the supply side promoting the initiative verses the demand side.

Pass a law that says that if you bear a prescription stating: You have been evaluated and diagnosed as someone who would benefit from THC therapy, then you should be able to possess it. Sales if allowed, should be through traditional outlets in a traditional manner of dosing not from business owned by the people promoting the cause. The treasurer/ board member of the group has a business already set up to dispense. and is currently working in finance for a mid sized medical non-profit org. that would benefit from the law.

Missouri Essentials, LLC. 2025 Zumbehl Rd #291. Saint Charles, MO 63303.

New Approach Missouri, 2025 Zumbehl Rd, #291 St. Charles, MO 63303

In CA anyone could get a Medical joint... Give me a few bucks, buy me a beer, and your set. Revolving door clinics so anyone at or below the poverty line got free Dr visit and free joints. I don't see MO buying into that.

We will see but I don't see it going anywhere in MO the way it stands.

When a drunk can correct your grammar your argument is likely less than solid...

Back to 0P issues like this are where I split with REPs completely.

When it comes to faith/morality hold your ground but when it comes to politics we're dealing with the general populace. The same rules don't apply.

You can't force sobriety or morality.

And both the Christian bible and the Koran teach that you are not a judge. You have no right to judge others and doing so is pointed out as a clear lack of faith and of trust in God's plan.

All drugs are different depending on the person but I'll always be against not allowing the average Joe or Jane choosing their own medical/supplement/religious avenue to health...

I wonder what direction those abominations known as "truth" commercials are going to take as marijuana becomes more mainstream.
