First US "Safe Injection" Site Expected To Open In California

SF safe injection sites expected to be first in nation, open around July 1
By Heather Knight February 5, 2018 Updated: February 6, 2018 8:26am

San Francisco is on track to open its first two safe injection sites this July, a milestone that will likely make the city the first in the country to embrace the controversial model of allowing drug users to shoot up under supervision. Other cities ó including Seattle, Baltimore and Philadelphia ó are talking about opening their own safe injection facilities, but San Francisco could get there first. Facilities already exist in Canada, Australia and Europe...The cityís fiscal year starts July 1, and Garcia said safe injection should begin ďclose to that date.Ē After officials get a sense of how the first two are working, a third and fourth could open, she said. The safe injection sites will initially be privately funded, though Garcia wouldnít say where the moneyís coming from. She said that will help the city avoid liability, since intravenous drug use is against state and federal law. Opening the sites doesnít require the approval of the Board of Supervisors or other city officials.

A lot of these people have mental health issues. When discussing the homeless, people need to keep that in mind. Someone shitting in a parking lot is not normal, not even for the homeless. Sorry, but most homeless aren't running around shitting in parking lots or behind bars etc. Only the severely ****ed are.

San Diego, near Petco, has a homeless problem. You'll find them near Petco and Eastern Downtown not because it's warmer there during the winter, but because the largest social service/Homeless shelter is just blocks away from Petco Park. San Diego's city council has been trying to get rid of that shelter for years because it's a wart on all their new shiny Condo projects in downtown. They don't want the homeless around soiling up their new condos and looking bad in front of the tourists.

I go downtown/gaslamp often - and the homeless problem continues to grow each year. You would have thought the condo uprising in the gaslamp (and political pressure) would have spurned some action to take place, but basically nothing. There are homeless sleeping along most all sidewalks in the gaslamp. It's a weird juxtaposition scene to see homeless sleeping on the same sidewalks where 20s-40s folks spend 20-30 to get into clubs, or 50-100 bucks on a nice dinner, etc etc.

Take a look underneath the overpasses along the 163, between the 8 and downtown. Trash (and I mean a ton of it), little pup-tents, and people under blankets.

It's gotten so far out of control, not sure what the solution is.

If a person has studied this subject thoroughly, he might very well become an expert without having experienced substance use disorder personally. Nora Volkow would be such a person.

Nora Volkow, sadly, doesn't post here. Guys with strongly worded, uninformed wild guesses post here.

Here's the absolute truth: "Just say no" and any related folk wisdom was all about substance use as a legal issue. It's useless for those of us who are attempting to approach it as a potentially fatal, chronic mental health issue.

For the record, I was a cigarette smoker for 25ish years. And was the guy that tried 1 zillion times to quit. I am now 1 year, 14 months, and I think 12 days (ain't doing the math) smoke free. Guess who got me hooked on cigarettes? The correct answer is me. I also have posted how I was prescribed legal drugs and figured out quick they were a dead end.

I spent years saying "It's just too hard, you don't understand". "If I don't get a smoke, I will just DIE!!" When I finally said, enough is enough, I sweated it out and did it. I'm not one to stand on the shoulders of experts and scream to the heavens "I need this, and it's somebody else's fault, such and such said so!!" ..... NOW. I was when I was addicted to my drug of choice......

Excuses are like assholes. We all have one, and they all stink Don't be an enabler

Smoking. Yeah.

Y'know, I told myself not to engage. Did I listen? Oh, hell no.

Thanks.

The difference is when you have a cigarette you don't end up catatonic on the street in a puddle of your own piss and then die there.

Like everyone else I know otherwise decent people who are pillbillies now. I don't live in a large city and we have some dope zombies wondering around, essentially homeless doing things like shooting up in the laundromat. Some have nearly bankrupted their parents in rehab they had little intention of curing them to others who have been turned loose to steal and live in tents.

That's 2 kids with broken bones who never needed more than ibuprofin. I've had knee surgeries and only took ibuprofin.

I think the biggest mistake is assuming someone needs opioids every single time they aren't comfortable. I've had the dentist offer it....didn't need it.

If someone comes into a safe place to shoot up, what they need is hauled off to a treatment center and locked inside for a few months IMO. Enabling isn't helping them.

Who made the choice?

If you have some story where somebody else beat and then tied them up, I'm all ears

I donít disagree that substance abuse is a mental health issue. It absolutely is.

But unlike depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and many other mental health issues, it is still a matter of choice. They can CHOOSE to get clean if they really really want to. There are a lot of places They can turn to for help.

Providing a place for junkies to shoot up is akin to saying ďitís ok, we donít care that your hopelessly addicted, hereís a place for you to further your sickness in comfort.Ē

Doing this isnít helping anyone, itís not doing anything to address the overall opioid crisis, itís just kicking the can down the road.

Weíre going to build safe injection sites. Go talk to your legislator. Heíll pretend to care what you have to say about it.

Donít address my argument at all, itís cool. We can agree to disagree.

As long as it stays privately funded and in Crazyfornia, I could care less. Itís a dumb idea, which is par for the course there.

That is how I see it.

I had a dentist give me a prescription for one of those strong ones when I had a root canal. Oxycodin or something like that. Didn't need a single one.

But, when I had my cataract surgery, I used about four of them, it was that painful.

Damn, that shit was good! I flushed the rest of them.
