Covitz:Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’
Former Chief Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’
Cornerback Brandon Flowers may have lost his job with the Chiefs, but he didn’t lose his self-confidence. Flowers, who was quickly signed by AFC West rival San Diego last week, 11 days after his release by the Chiefs, blew his horn pretty loudly in an interview with NFL Network last week. Here’s an excerpt from that interview with Flowers, who last year made the first Pro Bowl in his six-year career, though he had been moved from left cornerback to a slot corner early in the season. On who’s the best cornerback in the NFL: “First off, let me must say, I am the best corner in football. Don’t let my injuries last year fool you and take my name from that top list. One guy whose game I definitely respect throughout the years was (Darrelle) Revis. Coming from a system that he played in, it’s a lot of man-to-man being played, him shadowing receivers, and he definitely put in that work. Not to say anything else bad about the other corners, but Revis is definitely a corner I respect in this league.” On how he felt when he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs: “I was very surprised when it happened. I knew I hit the cap pretty hard, but I thought if I was going to get traded or released it was going to be in February or March sometime. The timing that they did it, it kind of hit me. That’s why I stayed in the division. I wanted to let the Chiefs know that’s why they hit me. I want to let them know how I felt about it.” On his familiarity staying within the division affecting his decision: “That made it comfortable. I also respected San Diego playing them throughout the years (and) how they run their organization. I always had respect for their players. It’s always hard fought, tough games when we played San Diego. I always sit on the other opposing side that I would love to play for a guy like Philip Rivers. He’s so fiery. He’s always got that attitude. He’s got that ‘want to.’ You can’t ask for nothing else from your leader. I think it’s the perfect match for me.” On his favorite thing from Kansas City and his favorite teammate: “My favorite thing about Kansas City was the fans. It felt like I never left college playing for Kansas City. No matter if we were winning four games … it was still crazy. You go to the malls, and everyone had on red. It was crazy. The fans were definitely my favorite thing about K.C.” “As far as teammate-wise, Derrick Johnson and Jamaal Charles were both my boys. (I’ve) been teammates with those guys for years. Off the field, we were always together. Those are my two. I can’t pick one over the other.” |

OK-so Brandon Flowers calls himself "the best corner in football"
Well hell then, with that logic I am calling myself the "best looking guy in the World!" LOL

You simply aren't going to be able to cover 3 or 4 WR constantly with the way teams line up these days. No team has 4 cover CB's.

You are absolutely right, but that isn't the point.

You aren't going to get pressure in 2 1/2 seconds or less, so your end is useless.

IF ther defense / CB's can cover in spots, you can cause the elite QB to hold on to the ball a split second longer and THEN the PASS RUSH becomes a factor. See 43-8 I used to assign more importance to the pass rush before all the rules changes and the evolution of the offenses, etc. Now, it's the other way around. A great pass rush can be beat all day with a quick release and an open WR. Cover the WR (I don't care if its zone or man) and you give the pass rush a chance.

Ok lets look at the Chiefs schedule and see how this pans out. Week 1 - Titans - Not good or elite QB. Week 2 - Broncos - Elite and an issue. Week 3 - Dolphins - Tannehill is a sack machine Week 4 - Patriots - Elite and always can be an issue but the WR are a dumpsterfire. Key to beating Brady is pressure, we all know this. Week 5 - 49ers - Not elite or quick release type QB. More of a running threat so front 7 is much more important. Not a pocket passer. Week 7 - Chargers - Rivers used to be pretty quick but is among league leaders in getting sacked the last few years and will make terrible throws under pressure. Week 8 - Rams - Bradford not elite or above average. Week 9 - Jets - Not elite, not quick release sack machine Week 10 - Bills - Not elite not a quick thrower Week 11 - Seahawks - Conservative would not say a quick thrower. Threat with his legs. Smart player and an issue regardless. Week 12 - Raiders - Week 13 - Broncos - Yea that dick again. Week 14 - Cardinals - Who is their QB again? Week 15 - Raiders - See #12 Week 16 - Steelers - Holds onto the ball all day long. Week 17 - Wivers again. Tell me in your opinion how many guys besides Manning that fall under this umbrella of being able to just stand in under pressure and deliver quick strikes all day? |

We play 16 games right?
8 of those are vs. legit NFL QB's. Brady Manning X2 Ruthlessrapist Rivers X2 Wilson Kap. These are legit QB's that have proven they can win. FIVE of these QB's have played in or won SB's. And it doesn't take a great QB to torch this defense. Our secondary is TERRIBLE outside of Berry...

None of these QBs are going to "just stand in under pressure and deliver quick strikes" (which isn't at all what Manning does). These teams are going to design game plans to get the ball out before pressure ha a chance to develop. Get the ball out in under 3 seconds and rely on yac to move the chains. Take an occassional shot downfield. Tex alluded to that SB. The Seahawks minimized yac with good solid fundamental tackling, with a couple of big hits thrown in for safe measure. They forced Manning to hold onto the ball, looking for more yards in the air, which allowed the pressure to then get to Manning. And suggesting that Manning "stands in under pressure" is laughable. Manning has shown time and again that when you take away the short passing game and yac that he wilts under pressure.
