Derrick Johnson's Tender Level Could Speak To Future With The Chiefs

Derrick Johnson's Tender Level Could Speak To Future With The Chiefs
by Joel Thorman

The Kansas City Chiefs will more than likely offer a tender to restricted free agent Derrick Johnson before the onset of free agency tomorrow night. What we don't know is what level that will be at.

Since there is expected to be a lot more movement going on in the restricted free agent market, tender levels can say a lot about a player, according to Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post.

"If a team is interested in trading a player," Lombardi writes, "it might lower the tender and make it attractive for a team to come in and make an offer. If a team tenders a first and a third, most teams will back off, but if they tender just a first rounder, there might be more action."

Insert DJ's name in there and see what happens.

If the Chiefs are interested in keeping him, they could tender him at a first and third round pick and some teams might shy away. However, if they tender him at just the first round pick level, there could be some teams inquiring about his availability.

So, keep an eye on DJ's tender level. There's been plenty of speculation swirling regarding his future with the team.

If somebody gives us a 2nd for him, send his ass packing and trade for Kirk Morrison or Greg Olsen.

If the Chiefs could get a fourth for DJ with all the defensive talent in the upcoming draft, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Of course, Pioli would probably take another project CB or a punter.

Or Boldin and another pick to go along with him.

Set it at a 3rd and see who bites...
If you have a taker for a #3... I let him fly.
You can replace him in April. And having 4 picks in Rounds 2 & 3 would be BIG!

A 2nd?

Fujita, playing the SAM backer position (the same one that DJ was drafted to play) for the Chiefs, led the team in tackles for two straight seasons. (BTW - He was the starting SAM backer for the Super Bowl Champions this past year.)

Then, after his third year in the league and coming into his prime, was traded for a sixth round pick.

A sixth round pick. For a guy that leads the team in tackles for two seasons and ends up winning a Super Bowl as the starting SAM backer for the Super Bowl winning team.

And you think that someone out there is going to give you a second round pick for DJ?

a fourth is not nearly enough for a player with his upside.

I would trade him for a 2nd, but not less to be honest.

I want to see him with good coaching and Gibbs is that guy.

I still think DJ can be a star.

Hopefully not... DJ is an amazing athlete and if WELL COACHED is worth a hell of a lot. If we took anything less than a 2nd.. we got robbed.

DJ hasnt had a single competent LB coach in all the time he has been a Chief and now has Parcells old LB coach who has a long history of success in the NFL.

I am actually excited to see what he plays like next year under better coaching and surely a few better players around him.

Since DJ was a first round pick, I believe the lowest that you can tender him is a first round tender. The lowest tender you can do nets you the same round pick that you gave up. There are first round tenders, first and third round tenders, second round tenders, and the lowest is a tender that returns whatever round you drafted them in.

I don't know if the Chiefs can give him a second round tender since he was a first round pick, but I know they can't go any lower than that, because the only other possibly lower option is the tender that returns the same round pick you gave up, and that would be a first.

Two completely different talents and situations.

First, the Chiefs didn't trade Fujita until September, which was after training camp and everyone knew he was probably going to get cut anyways. And, all the teams rosters were pretty much set, and as mentioned above, training camp was over. So, he wouldn't be ready to produce for a few weeks.

Second, the Chiefs got two picks for him, not just one. They got a sixth round pick, and I believe a fifth in 2007, but it was conditional and I can't quite remember.

Now, the other part of this is that Fujita is a 'good' talent. DJ is a 'great' talent. DJ has far more ability than Fujita. Like it or not, coaches always believe they can get the most out of a player.

So, a second round pick is not a stretch. They can put the first round tender on him and then trade him for whatever round pick they feel is an acceptable offer. I am not saying that it WILL happen, but the these are totally different situations.
