Jaye Howard or Sean Smith

Which would you sign.

For the sake of argument, let's assume the following contracts (without getting into the details too much):

Sean Smith gets a 5 year, 52.5 million deal (10.5 per). First year cap hit is 6.6 m to fit cap constraints. Roughly on par with Byron Maxwell's deal (5th highest for a CB).

Jaye Howard gets a 4 year, 36 million deal (9.0 per). First year cap hit is 6.6 m to fit cap constraints. Roughly on par with Derek Wolfe's and Jurrell Casey's deals (6th and 7th highest for 3-4 DE).

Why do you say that? I think Gaines, Peters and Nelson will play a lot next year. If Sean Smith leaves, get a guy like Trumaine Johnson or Jeremy Lane and there's your 4.

You also have Ron Parker to fill in that slot if need be and I think they would do that over Fleming

Not knowing what their offseason moves would be, an injury or two could bump a guy like Fleming up into a starting role.

I'd hope that wouldn't happen but it definitely could.

Anyone have advanced data on Smith? Targets, yards, TDs?

Why?

There's no reason to cut him unless someone beats him out.

We shouldn't have to. I'm pretty sure his rookie contract runs out this offseason

You're right but I think if any team has 2 of their top 4 CB's injured they'd be screwed

It's a passing league and you are going to have to defend teams that can pass in the postseason. You can never have too many high quality corners.

Sharp Football Analysis put this "ideal roster" article out there a while back (2014), but I think it still applies... http://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com...-in-todays-nfl

Basically, CB is more valuable than "star DL" in their opinion.

Sign them both... There are loopholes in the salary cap.. It's pretty obvious when you see all the signings that happen in the offseason.

I'm sure Dorsey will be able to get it done.

don't sign either

bank a couple comp picks in 2017 (say a 3rd and a 4th, to use in trade up for QB)

sign berry, allen, dj
sign a mid-tier fa wr or cb

draft DL with first round pick, use second on whichever position wasn't addressed in fa (wr/cb)

roll money forward for poe and kelce

avoid having too much money on dl
avoid giving large contract to 29 yr old cb

devil's advocate

I actually like this idea, because these signings are more crucial.

Kelce will get paid an enormous sum.

We currently have 48 million dollars in cap room for 2017, but only 30 players under contract for that year.

http://overthecap.com/calculator/kansas-city-chiefs/

That 48 million will be needed for the salaries of:

Eric Berry
Hali or replacement
DJ or replacement
Sean Smith or replacement
Mike DeVito or replacement
Jeff Allen or replacement
Eric Fisher
Dontari Poe
Travis Kelce
Cairo Santos

PLUS 13 other guys

That's a lot of key players who are all going to be fairly expensive. Kelce, Poe, Fisher, Smith, Berry are all gonna want 8-10 mil a year. Howard too, when you consider guys like Dareus are making double that.

You gonna use 1/3 of that 48 mil (or more IMO) on Smith and Howard?

I think at best we keep one of them.

lol as if he's mainly a DE when they're in the 3-4, base these days is nickel where you put essentially 4-3 DE talent on the line like Watt. Also, you said it yourself, ALL BY HIMSELF. Your blind ass homerism is overrating Howard.

This so dumb. Who's going to play at a high level longer?

4 years of Howard versus two years at best of Smith for similar dough.

Howard by a landslide.
