Well back when I was a kid ......

Give us your story of some of the things you did as a kid growing up that kids do not do today. We all heard the stories of what our parents did as kids, what stories you got to pass along to your kids ?

Went down to the creek to catch crawdads
Played baseball (with ghost runners!) or 500 in the empty lot down the street
Stayed out all day without our parents needing to know where we were at
Played hide and seek at night. The whole neighborhood was fair game
Stayed at home by ourselves during summer vacation while the parents were at work
Rode our bikes all over town (no helmets)

In addition to playing outside for hours, we would wander a long ways from home and not be in communication with our parents for hours. They had no idea where we were. They watched us walk out the door and assumed we'd be back in time for dinner. If anyone was late, you'd hear (usually) a mother yell out to the neighborhood, "Jiiiiiiiiimy, diiiiiiner!" several times, until Jimmy would yell back, "Coooooooming!"

My friends and I would walk a mile from home, along a busy road with no sidewalk and a narrow shoulder, to the convenience store to buy candy, baseball cards, Wacky Packages, etc. I'd shit if my kids had done that when they were younger.

Plus, starting when I was 8 and continuing until I was 14, my parents would put me on a plane, BY MYSELF, to fly to Missouri to spend summers with my grandparents. Granted, back then they were direct flights, no changing of planes. But I once mentioned possibly doing that with our kids when they were younger and my wife nearly flipped. "ARE YOU CRAZY?"

God, that was an official sport in my neighborhood, esp with snowballs.
We called it "Pooning". And if you could get a "Double" (you hit someone, they chased on foot, gave up and got back in their car, and you hit them again)...YOU WERE GOD!

I used to watch the Broncos always go the playoffs and sometimes go to the Super Bowl. Now I'm an adult and its about the same. But that whole time I've never seen the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl.

i'd spend the weekend w/my grandmother in stl where she lived about a quarter mile from a drive-in theater. after dark i'd climb to the top of a pine tree in her yard and watch the "r" rated movies.

I could watch Warner Bros and Looney Tunes cartoons before and after school on our independent station (folks, remember there used to be four TV stations: ABC, NBC, CBS and the independent UHF station).

BUT, with regard to Saturday cartoons, remember for awhile in the 70s on a Friday night in early September each network would have a show previewing that year's Saturday morning lineup that would premiere the next day. I remember one year Lee Majors hosted ABC's.

Or how about watching sex scenes through a scrambled cable channel? It would occasionally freeze for one second, and you could see tit!

One time we convinced this girl from down the street to get inside of a tomato cage. Once she got in, we proceeded to throw rotten cherry tomatoes at her.

I have NO earthly idea why she did that.

For me, it was Greyhound. My grandparents lived 500 miles away and my folks would put me on the bus in the summer so I could stay with them for a while. I also started around 8. I wasn't supposed to get off the bus but usually did anyway when we stopped for lunch at the halfway point.

I always wanted to just read and sleep but I always ended up stuck next to some old lady that would preach at me the whole way. I guess I looked like I needed it.

That's far scarier than my experiences. I loved flying. But taking the bus would've scared me.
