Ten Things About Today's Game: Week 3, KC 24 - LA 10

Ten Things About Today’s Game, Week 3 KC 24 LA 10

10. I’ve seen a lot of talk today about 45 calling kneeling NFL players “Sons of Bitches.” Clark Hunt published a statement that Sam Mellinger called “Corporate PR Gobbletygook,” which I agree with. I’m just going to say this: Personally, I stand for the National Anthem and take my hat off. I sing sometimes. I don’t yell “CHIEFS” at the end of it. I’m an American and love this country with all its warts. I have the flag that was on my dad’s casket in a wooden case on the dresser in my bedroom. I watch sports as a distraction to escape from work, politics and my other daily worries and problems. Unfortunately, sometimes the two worlds -politics and sports- collide. This issue is one of those cases. My feeling is, let the players do their thing, let everyone express personal patriotism as they see fit, appreciate that this is a free country that allows personal expression for all, and let’s go play ball. That’s all I have to say about that.

9. Phyllis is like jock itch. Doesn’t seem to matter how much ointment you use, it hangs around and makes things uncomfortable for way too long. I was afraid this was going to be one of those Chargers games where we gave Phyllis one too many chances, we’d give up a late DPI and either lose on a two point conversion, or lose in OT. Difference this time was, we have this year’s edition of Zeke Elliot, and his name is Kareem the Dream. Kid will be All-Pro, you watch.

8. I kept a running tab on the game. Phyllis throws pick number one to Mitchell after the first minute of the game. Hunt picks up nine yards on his first carry. KC averaged more than ten yards per play on first down; that’s pretty great. Pass to Tyreek Hill for the first TD was perfectly thrown by Alex. Pick number two by Peters on Phyllis comes at the 7:45 mark. Wilson scores on the shovel pass and throws the ball hard at the LA fans. KC is up 14 zip after the first 10 minutes. The stupid penalties start to bubble up for KC: Ford hits Phyllis low, gets a roughing penalty, Chargers score on the next play. Then KC goes into a penalty marred shell for most of the game.

7. Second quarter: KC’s first drive snuffed by a Witzman holding penalty. Mitchell stop LA’s drive with his second pick, barely getting his feet in bounds. Midget misses a 52 yarder but gets roughed on the kick. KC gets the ball on the 19, drive gets killed with a penalty on West. KC settles for a 34 yard field goal, and that’s all the scoring till Hunt puts the game away late in the fourth quarter. Late in the second quarter, Peters does his best Kelce impersonation, drawing a unsportsmanlike penalty for bitching at the refs when he thought LA pushed off on him on the previous play. LA settles for a field goal, goes in for the half only down by seven despite Phyllis throwing three picks. KC only runs 19 offensive plays in the first half, Kelce has only one catch for one yard, his entire offensive output for the entire game.

6. KC gets the ball to start the second half. First drive killed by a penalty on Kelce for holding Bosa on a sweep. KC benefits from Gordon being hampered by a bum knee. Peters gets killed on a blind side block from Gates, scrapes his ass up off the field and goes out for a couple plays. Comes back in and drops a pick, which would have been his second of the game. LA has to punt, KC holds on the play and get backed up to the 15 yard line. Alex gets sacked as Schwartz gets beat by Ingram on a stunt. Ingram ends the day with three sacks against our O-Line. Not acceptable. KC only up by seven starting the fourth quarter.

5. Andy gets cute, tries a fake punt at midfield, but Zombo blows his block on the edge and Albert Wilson gets tackled way short. LA drive stalls, Phyllis gets pissed at his coach when not allowed to go for it on 4th and 10. KC gets pinned on the five after the punt. Kareem Hunt blows through a hole and gets the ball out to the 25. KC gets an inexplicable delay of game, then throws a little dump pass to West on 3rd and forever, and he fumbles and luckily gets it back. The game could have turned right there and then. Phyllis keeps getting chance after chance. He tries to throw his fourth pick AGAIN by testing Peters, who tips the ball to Sorenson who can’t make a clean catch. Just under 10 minutes left, Alex tries to hit Hill down the sideline, Hill is open, Alex is off target, Hill comes up limping. Wilson makes a great play to dive for the marker on third down, gets a first down that does two important things: One, sustains the drive to give our gassed defense some time to get a blow; and two, makes LA waste their first time out. Chiefs are able to chew some clock, Hill makes a dive for the sticks on third down at the five minute mark but can’t quite make it. Colquitt punts to Phyllis at the five minute mark. Zombo gets a DPI for penalty number eleven; then Murray gets a holding call for penalty number twelve. At four minute mark, game changing defensive play turned in by Houston with a 3rd and 10 sack on Phyllis. LA forced to punt at three minute mark. Then the game got iced.

4. Kareem Hunt is the offensive player of the game. That last drive was all Hunt. He ran hard three times prior to the two minute warning, making a critical first down and forcing LA to use up time outs. Then after the two minute warning, Hunt broke the big one, a 69 yard beautiful run where nobody laid a hand on him. It was a Marcus Allen like cutback, he hit the hole, turned on the jets, and was gone daddy gone. Hunt ends with 172 yards rushing. The beautiful thing about the offense is they’ve outscored the opposition 42-10 in the fourth quarter thus far. As Mitch would say “Put…the…hammer…DOWN."

3. On the stat line, Total yards and TOP was basically even for both teams. KC had literally twice as many penalty yards -122 to 61-.If KC is not the most penalized team in the NFL, they’re in the top two or three. 13 penalties is way too many, and for most of the game it seemed like Alex was constantly in second and 20 or third and 15. The penalties were the only thing keeping LA in the game. Offensive line gave up five sacks, which is going to get Alex hurt if they don’t clean it up. Biggest stat comparison today was LA three turnovers, KC zero, although West came close to a disastrous cough up in the second half. Alex “manages” this game, does a good job and does his best to protect the early lead for the final three quarters. Bravo.

2. Defensive star of the game was Terrence Mitchell. Two picks, and led the team in tackles with nine, as Phyllis picked on him all day long. Biggest momentum play was Houston’s sack on Phyllis late in the fourth quarter. That snuffed LA's last real chance to win. Kudos to Sutton for shutting out LA in second half in their home dinky soccer crib. Only significant injury today was to Dee Ford. He got dinged up last week against Philly. Even with his weakness against the run, we need a healthy Ford back, as Zombo doesn’t have the same skill set.

1. Andy has got to get a handle on the penalties in all phases, including another dumb unsportsmanlike penalty by a player (Peters this time). Big picture: KC has now won 25 of the last 29 regular season games, and the Donks lost today. So we will be wrestling with The Faid for the AFC West Driver’s seat. Hopefully the Raiders will lose to the Skins tonight, and both teams will beat each other up. Andy knows how to play NFC East football, so I think he’ll do a fine job scheming for the Redskins. Being on MNF will be a big advantage for KC with the home crowd. Glad we won, Phyllis is still a little Bitch, and I’m sure our rematch with him at Arrowhead will be another tense battle - as it usually is. Undefeated feels pretty good, don’t it? Let’s enjoy it tonight and then get ready for our next prime time showcase, which should be the ultimate “piss off the PC crowd,” Chiefs versus the Redskins. Is the chop off limits next week? Just asking….

That 42-10 stat is impressive. This team has a different feel to it to me.

im re-watching the game:

and figured why kelce didn't get the ball again... he argued with the ref about something after his one yard reception.

so andy did decide he was the boss, not kelce.
