It's official: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on the air at ABC.
The Joss Whedon drama based on the Marvel Comics property has landed a series order at the Disney-owned network, ABC announced Friday.

The ABC Studios project is based on Marvel Comics' secret intelligence organization that has appeared in countless titles, including Iron Man, Captain America and The Ultimates, since being introduced in the 1960s. The military law-enforcement agency's moniker stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate, which also has evolved over time in the comics.

Whedon is on board to co-pen the pilot alongside his brother Jed Whedon and Jed's wife, Maurissa Tancharoen; the trio previously teamed on the three-part web series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Avengers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer mastermind Whedon directed the pilot, which has had ABC social media accounts for months. S.H.I.E.L.D. is executive produced by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb.

ER's Ming-Na stars as Agent Melinda May, The Avengers' Clark Gregg reprises his role as Agent Phil Coulson, Killing Lincoln's Brett Dalton is set as gruff rising star Agent Grant Ward, Elizabeth Henstridge as science whiz Agent Gemma Simmons and Iain DeCaestecker as tech guru Agent Leo Fitz, with Nashville's Chloe Bennet set as Skye, a superhero-obsessed woman.
Since the project was first announced in August, it has been a clear front-runner to land on ABC's 2013-14 schedule. ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee told reporters in January that the project was being fast-tracked and he was "very hopeful" that the entry with a "great script" would go

"Marvel has the ability to bring the whole family around it," Lee said at the time. "Joss has great relationships around it. There's a lot of real funny male-female relationships and flirtations, but it's also Joss and Marvel, so there's a lot of action to it."

"My boss Bob Iger buys Marvel, and how wonderful is it for ABC to be able to use the core talent from that and not use the Marvel brand but the Avengers franchise for a show that is not exactly about the Avengers but is attached to it?" Lee said, noting that Whedon was already working on scripts at the time.

ABC will start a major marketing push for the high-profile project with a sizable built-in fan base Sunday, May 12, airing a first look at 8 p.m. ahead of the season finale of Once Upon a Time.

Some of the highlights:

From the first scene, “Beginning of the End” (which has now been confirmed to not be the series finale) hits the ground running, and all the built-up tension of the last 22 episodes is released into 60 minutes of pure pay off. The best part, however? Within all that making good, the series finally stands its ground and stakes its claim as a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How does one do that? By establishing world changing consequences that don’t just affect one MCU franchise, but all of them.

The biggest promise made by the end of “Beginning of the End” is Marvel’s live-action world can now be shaped by anything, no matter how small… which, as it so happens, is also the main message of the episode itself. The littlest of things can change everything.

this is, by far, the most well put together episode of the series to date. There’s no denying a lot of that has to do with the previously mentioned build-up, but that’s okay because it’s just nice to know the series didn’t crumble under the weight of its own scale. Every story arc is given its due (even the ones audiences may have forgotten about from the beginning of the season), and every character is given a chance to shine in their own right, all well setting up more arcs for season two.

It’s been a long journey, and there’s no question many viewers’ patience wore thin toward the end, but that never stopped Marvel from pushing forward to one of the most entertaining hours of television this season and finally cementing a deserved place on the small screen.

Okay, that was pretty much constant awesome from the second Sam Jackson showed up. I didn't expect him to be that involved. Like a coda for both Avengers and CA2.

Yeah, fans of the movies almost have to be required to watch. Get insight for the movies. Hell, imagine them having to do something with each up coming marvel produced movie. The cameos and tie ins would give great stories. Then their own arcs.

It's the fill-in show while Agents of SHIELD is on winter hiatus. The lead-ins are some new sitcoms.

That was a badass episode. Great to see Samuel L cameo. Awesome the way he was used.

What's funny is, the violence was more graphic than the movies. Specifically when he pulled the generals bones out.

1. Who was the guy at the end looking at Sky's picture?
2. What was Coulsons carving on the wall?

I really liked the May vs. Ward throwdown. That was some brutal close-quarters, grab-what-you-can fight choreography. It reminded my of Bond and Grant in the train car in From Russia with Love.

1. Her father.

2. We don't know. Same thing Garrett was carving. Probably something that ties in to Guardians of the Galaxy or Avengers 2. I thought it might have something to do with Ultron, since it looked like circuitry or whatnot, but I've seen other speculation that it's Kree.

I like that Ward didn't turn good again even though they started hinting that way. They didn't kill him either, so of course they can always bring him back.

Yes. There might be redemption for him next season -- perhaps involving Skye, when her inner "monster" is unleashed -- but it would have been too easy to have him turn on Garrett and kill him and then everything be OK to end this season. Glad they're holding back on that.

Skye and Raina are Inhumans. Which would make sense, but the timing might not be right. I'd imagine they'd want to introduce the concept of Inhumans with the movie, which couldn't come out until 2016 at the earliest.
