2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

The above was only starting pitchers and losses so it doesn't include games where the offense overcame Yost's ****ups or when he left relievers in too long or when he left struggling pitchers in under 85 pitches.

The only thing difficult to do is to estimate how many games would have turned out different if the pitching change was made earlier. Half might be too high an estimate, you think?

Yea, I don't really get why starting pitchers are such pussys now days?

It is a different game. Plus now there's so much money involved, that doesn't help either. You invest tens of millions of dollars in a pitcher and he blows his arm out and it's on your head. Look at Prior and Wood. Or even with the Royals, Gil Meche. Here was a starter who could post a sub-4 ERA in the American League, Hillman blew him out and he was never the same guy again, ever.

Don't you think that it's possible that he would have hurt himself anyway? Why is it always that if a pitcher pitches high pitch counts that it was that reason? You are either injury prone or not, I don't think it has alot to do with pitch counts as much as ppl lead you to believe.

Maybe it's just perception, but it seems like pitchers have more arm problems in today's game than they did 25/30 years ago?

It's possible, but they way they handled him was was awful. They litterally knew he was injured and let him pitch TWO more times. My memory may be hazy this time at night, let me go find the Rany article about it.

As much as I dislike Yost, it's just incredibly difficult to quantify something like this. What if he had subbed Chen for Crow in the 8th inning today and Crow had blown the game? This would have been a loss that no one would have ever looked back upon again, heck, for all we know, Yost saved the game by putting Chen out there for an ill advised 8th inning.

Its tough to quantify, but yost has a well established deficiency with respect to bullpen management.

I guess it's possible... but the Royals let him throw 130+ pitches one night. Then it all went downhill. There's a pretty clear trail of evidence. He got clobbered a few times. The Royals even suggested the guy had dead arm, and yet they let him go back out there for 115-120 pitches a game a couple more times. He was never the same after that. And then when he got clobbered over and over to start the next year, they still let him throw a ton of pitches. There was one night where he threw 128 pitches. Hillman ran him straight into the ground.
