Chiefs Suggestion: Do away with the draft. - Page 8

I've started coming around to this line of thinking in the past year or so.

These are guys that, like NFL free agents, should get to capitalize on their play in the past couple years to choose the most advantageous position for themselves that they can get.

I don't see why this idea is controversial. It'd be an insane cluster****, sure, but no worse than free agency is anyway.

I suppose the only argument that I can think of against it are:

1. If we do this, the "less popular teams" (i.e. the Jags, the Chiefs, the Bills) will have trouble bringing on top shelf talent.

and

2. The draft is designed to give all teams a fair shot, and to enforce parity upon the NFL.

I think both of these arguments are defunct.

When it comes to NFL free agency, "lesser" teams have zero trouble bringing on premier talent if they offer the most money. It's less about where the best opportunity is (with rare exceptions), and more about where the best $$$ is.

And that deflates the 2nd argument, too. The salary cap is what keeps parity in the league, not the draft. The Patriots can't scoop up the best talent at every position in a non-draft NFL, because they wouldn't have the cap space to rake in the best talent. Like everybody else, they'd have to pick which rookies they want to pursue for the +++ money, then like everybody else try to find the bargain talents and so on.

Yes, that was the question. Your suggestion would make contract money the only factor in determining where a young college player goes. Rookie contract slotting was already required to prevent college players from demanding hundreds of millions.

Your suggestion would undo all of that, in addition to screwing up the rookie pool system. It would create multiple new problems, while fixing none.

6. Wonderlic draft. In a true gesture at the importance of getting a degree and handling life after football, draftees are assigned to teams solely based on their Wonderlic score.

7. Geography map. Players are given unlabeled maps and have to place pins at the location of each team's stadium. They are assigned the team where they placed the pin the closest to the actual location. If they place a pin more than 100 miles from the location, GMs from those team can instead claim the player if they can place a pin within 25 miles of the player's home town.

It would benefit the Denver Broncos.

There are the players that want money and don't care where they get it. Then there are the players that say, "I can make way more money in the long run by looking good playing with Peyton Manning than I can if I take $2 million extra upfront playing with Alex Smith." That's a very broad base of a talent pool to choose from. Normally those players would be going in a much higher round to a different team, but under your system, they're free to take chump change as long as they wind up in Denver.

I agree with both of these. You also could get a scenario where the top talent collude together to take less to play on the same team.

9. Let's Make a Deal system. GMs dress up in costume and get to select a player behind a hidden door. They are then sometimes offered additional money or picks to switch doors and take a different player.

10. Combined rookie/veteran draft. Each team puts up a protected list of 7 players. Whenever a team drafts a rookie, the team next in line can choose to draft a rookie or they can roll the dice and select a veteran from the previous team. If that player is on the protected list, the choosing team loses the pick. Otherwise, they get the player.

I actually really like my #5 and #10 suggestions. I think they would be better than the current draft.
