Mayock has Winston ahead of Mariota
Mayock puts Winston ahead of Mariota
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...omment-4029373 Last week, NFL Media draft expert Mike Mayock discussed the pros and cons of quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. This week, Mayock ranked the two of them against each other. “The quarterback position is one of the weakest in the 2015 Draft,” Mayock said on Thursday’s NFL Total Access. “There are two guys clearly at the top of the board. I have Jameis Winston number one. The reason is in his offense, I can see everything you want out of a quarterback. He has a big arm, he throws with anticipation, he understands timing — he gets the whole pocket awareness thing. “Now, I don’t like all of the interceptions he throws; he reminds me a little bit of a Jay Cutler coming out of Vanderbilt. He has no conscience whatsoever; he’ll let it rip but he has the physical skill set to play and succeed in the NFL at the highest level. Obviously a whole host of off-the-field concerns have to be evaluated.” That remains the biggest potential negative for Winston, especially in the wake of Johnny Manziel pulling off the ultimate Eddie Haskell routine a year ago. “For Mariota, it’s a whole different conversation,” Mayock said. “I love him off the field and all of the individual components on the field work; he’s fast, he’s going to run 4.5 to 4.6, he has a big arm, athletic, great feet. But because of the spread offense run by Oregon, we don’t know if he can put all of those individual components together and play as a pocket quarterback in the NFL. He reminds me a little bit of Colin Kaepernick, who ran his 40 at 4.63 in the Combine.” The scrutiny escalates next week, when Mariota and Winston and plenty of other prospects descend on Indianapolis for interviews and a variety of exercises and measurements. Winston’s challenge will be to prove that he has the ability to mature off the field; Mariota’s challenge will be to prove that he has the ability to mature on it. Either way, it’s currently becoming clear that the Buccaneers will be taking one or the other with the first pick in the draft, given the decision to unload Josh McCown. Unless, of course, the Bucs sign a veteran in free agency and entrust the job to Mike Glennon. |

All the talking heads will tell you that Winstons is the most pro ready of the two athletes. The only reason that Mariota is ranked higher by some other is because of the off the field issues that surround Winston.

Mayock is correct. I see eye-to-eye with Mayock often. Winston is far superior of a football player on the field. If he can keep it clean off the field in the NFL, he's going to be pretty damn good. Mariota, while squeaky clean, may struggle mightily transitioning to the pros.

Mariota needs to sit for a year or two.
He'd be the perfect Aaron Rodgers situation for us if he falls. |

OK, I've steered clear of ESPN for a long time, but I've heard some stuff recently, and I do know that it is ESPN. Grain of salt, sure. But I've heard a lot of shit that Winston is going #1 overall, he's as smart as Peyton Manning, and Mariota could fall out of the top 10.
Is this real life? I don't know much about what either one did in the combine, but I want nothing to do with any mother****er that is a RS Soph draft prospect whose second year was markedly worse than his first. Yeah, talent around him, blah blah blah. Still, HE GOT WORSE. And no injury, just his own distraction. And nobody is even talking about it. Am I off base here? |

Also, why would I inherently have any kind of major problem with a lesser second season, when his first season was Heisman worthy, and his second season still produced an undefeated season until the playoffs, even with a lesser supporting offensive cast? |
