All-Time Best First Round

Okay, so here's a thing.

Let's try and put together the best possible first round of all time.

For example, if you think Peyton Manning (1998) is the best #1 overall pick of all time, he'd be the first pick. Marshall Faulk (1994) might be your pick for the best #2 of all time, and so on.

(Actually, maybe "all-time" should just be "since the merger" because the draft was a much different animal before the modern era, I think.)

Let's do it! I think Manning/Faulk is debatable, so I'll leave those blank for now, but #3 and #4 seem pretty obvious to me.

Updating as people suggest picks, but all of these slots are still open to debate.

1. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts (1998)
2. Lawrence Taylor, New York Giants (1981)
3. Barry Sanders, Detroit Lions (1989)
4. Derrick Thomas, Kansas City Chiefs (1989)
5. Deion Sanders, Atlanta Falcons (1995)
6. John Riggins, New York Jets (1971)
7. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings (1997)
8.
9. Brian Urlacher, Chicago Bears (2000)
10.
11.
12. Warren Sapp, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1995)
13. Tony Gonzalez, Kansas City Chiefs (1997)
14. Jim Kelly, Buffalo Bills (1983)
15.
16. Jerry Rice, San Francisco 49ers (1985)
17. Emmitt Smith, Dallas Cowboys (1991)
18.
19.
20.
21. Randy Moss, Minnesota Vikings (1998)
22.
23.
24. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (2005)
25.
26. Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens (1996)
27. Dan Marino, Miami Dolphins (1983)
28.
29.
30.
31.
32.

True, I can't argue that fact...I'm just rolling with the fact Riggins was local to my hometown, and alot of people I know played HS against him. Jones gets the real nod, but Riggins is my slanted pick.

I just don't like Randy Moss. For as good as he is/was, I still consider him a waste of talent. If he had applied himself even remotely like Jerry Rice did, I can't imagine what he could have achieved.

I don't know, I'd probably draft Riggins because he's freaking Riggins!

I don't know what else I can do to educate people about the myth of Elway's 'greatness'. Manning is a Bronco and I now hate him, but he is a great quarterback. He's not a mediocre quarterback who built up stats by playing a long time and having the luxury of picking a playoff-caliber team for his whole career.

didn't read the whole post, but assuming somebody mentioned marcus allen at 10. Also, **** Peyton Manning.

Marshall Faulk revolutionized the modern day offense and the modern day running back... probably.

Also, did I mention **** Peyton Manning?

Love randy moss. Mostly because he's honest.

Also, he's been on like half the top 10 offenses in the history of the league. Considering how many different QBs and systems he's done it with, it's not hard to say he was the reason why.

He was also one helluva catch from david tyree from being a superbowl champion.

Mostly he didn't take shit from anybody and didn't give a damn about what people thought of him. Personally, that gets my respect.

Lynn Swann performed in an Era where he was literally raped the whole way down the field. Definitely deserves the nod.

He was a Pro Bowler THREE times. THREE. He was All Pro ONCE. He played EIGHT years.

Let's compare him to a few other great WRs of their era, and then let's cut Moss's statistics IN HALF:

Career years:
Swann: 1974-82.
Pearson: 1974-84
Warfield: 1964-77
Carmichael: 1971-84
Moss: 1998-current

Receptions:
Swann: 336
Pearson: 489
Warfield: 427
Carmichael: 590
Moss (halved): 491

Yards:
Swann: 5,462
Pearson: 7,822
Warfield: 8,565
Carmichael: 8,985
Moss (halved): 7,646

TDs:
Swann: 51
Pearson: 48
Warfield: 85
Carmichael: 79
Moss (halved): 78

Pro Bowls:
Swann: 3
Pearson: 3
Warfield: 8
Carmichael: 1
Moss: 7

All Pro (first team):
Swann: 1
Pearson: 3
Warfield: 6
Carmichael: 4
Moss: 5

Swann wasn't even the best WR of his generation, and his stats don't even match up to Moss if you cut Moss's stats in half to account for the change in the game over the years. Moss has been part of the two highest scoring offenses in NFL history (1998 Vikes, 2007 Pats), and was part of the 15-1 1998 Vikes and 16-0 Patriots.

Yeah, Swann over Moss. Not so much.

I think he mailed it in in Oakland, and is a juvenile. But nobody puts up his stats by being either lazy or stupid. I think that stuff gets over-sold a bit. Yes, he can give up on games/plays, and that is a strike against him, but on balance and overall, he was a very, very intelligent football player who played great football for a very, very long time.

You're comparing his effort to Jerry Rice, which is a bit crazy. Rice's work ethic was maniacal -- like a Larry Bird or a Michael Jordan. Not everyone is built that way. Maybe it annoys you didn't work like a complete dog, but he didn't NEED TO to be unbelievably successful on the field.

I don't love him, but neither do I hate him. He is (was, really) incredibly great as a WR though. It's inarguable.

I'm a diehard Chief, but #4 has to be either Walter Payton or Gale Sayers. #5 I'd give to Junior Seau. #6 is tough if you can't count Jim Brown. And one of the weakest spots is #12. I know it was before the merge, but one name I haven't seen on here is Joe Namath. 1965
