"We have a young QB who needs to develop. What should we do?"

Option A) Put him with a defensive-minded head coach who runs an ultra-conservative philosophy. That way, he will only pass in known passing downs, removing any element of surprise from the gameplan, while also fearing mistakes so much that he turns into a checkdown machine.

Option B) Have him play for a coach who is more worried about keeping his own job than developing his players, so that he'll toss him out there as soon as possible despite the player's need to learn the playbook, master the fundamentals of the position, and adjust to the speed of the game.

Option C) Insert him into a talent-less lineup immediately because you need a spark, then act befuddled when his production suffers and his play regresses

Option D) Any combination of the above, including all at once.

And you wonder why these guys flounder.
EJ Manuel has a talentless group?

One of the best defensive rosters in the AFC.

One of the best Offensive Rosters in the AFC, from OL to RB to the WR position.

How is EJ set up to fail? He's the reason why the Bills aren't dominant. If they had even a competent QB, they would be able to take that division away from Tom Brady right now. That's why they are dumping Manuel, cause he sucks so much that he can't even handle doing the bare minimum to consistently win games despite having a better roster around him than a lot of the QBs in this league have.

Tampa's just about Lovie wanting to have a guy instill his style. Glennon could be starting before the year's out.

I'm not 100% out on Smith, either, even though I don't think he'll work out long-term. I think he needed at least one year on the bench. He's got the physical tools. I don't know how many years you give his head to catch up, and it's tough to fix a guy who wilts under pressure, though.

What about Ortons actions the last 3 years makes you think he's interested in starting a game?

Reading comprehension is your friend.

"Any combination thereof"

Manuel has weapons, but he needed a solid year on the bench before he was ready. Throwing him into the fire immediately was just plainly irresponsible, and the Bills are reaping the rewards from that.

He had a second round grade for a reason. The guy needed a ton of work.

It's like none of you have ever followed developmental curves in other sports. If you want a baseball player to fail the best thing is to move him up the ladder before he's ready. You'll have him learn bad habits while killing his confidence.

This is no different.

I feel like, if I were Orton, I'd be totally content collecting checks as a backup. Dude's been bringing in $5+ mil per year to ride the pine for the longest time.

The Bills, with a vastly superior roster than the Chiefs, couldn't get out of their own way against them on their own field.

****ing stupid.

Rush a guy in who shouldn't have started year one anyway and then piss on him when he struggles. If you aren't willing to give a rookie 2 or 3 seasons to grow in to the job then why draft them that high?...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

They're pissing on him because their team is ready to win now and could have a legitimate shot if their QB was at least decent. EJ Manuel can't even achieve that level of play, thus the reason why they are benching him. He sucks and hasn't gotten any better from last season, it's plain and simple.

If Orton wasn't such a mouth breather he could have been an average to above average QB.

The Bill's front office is moronic. They compound their mistakes instead of building the offense around EJ's strengths.
