Don't worry about it. If you want to take off and get married, do it. If you want to live together a bit and get some shot figured out, job house etc., do it.
People's marriages fail because they're idiots. Engagement period will not change that, unless you're engaged long enough to figure out that one or both of you is an idiot. |

Wife and I got engaged about 9 months into our relationship. When we scraped together enough money to think about a wedding, she got pregnant and we put it on hold. When we scraped enough money together again, she got pregnant again, so we put it on hold. We then decided that we weren't going to have any more kids and we finally scraped together enough money to get married after 5 years or so of being engaged. Yeah, we could have went to the JP, but we both kind of wanted to at least have a small formal wedding and reception. That is exactly what we had. We did it on the cheap and made the meal ourselves with the help of our mothers, hired our own bartenders and servers, and bought the liquor and beer ourselves.

Never understood why people get engaged and then wait. Course, never understood why folks spend more than $1000 on a wedding either.
Way to start out your life - in debt.

All said and done, I think we spent about $2K on the wedding. And we both said after that we should have eloped. Weddings are overrated. |

I got married at 20. We had been together a total of 3.5 years prior. Believe we were engaged for like 6 months maybe. Wedding set her rich parents back about 25k from what I was told.
And we divorced at 23 |
