Rabbit Issue

Any of you guys ever have any problems with rabbits tearing up your yard. I have one tricky rabbit from hell that has his favorite spot in my front yard. He apparently comes in very late Digs around in the same spot and sleeps there. The rabbit population is out of control around here. I have kept it down a little bit via lead poisoning, AKA my .22 long rifle with subsonic rounds.

I've tried a few things but haven't had any luck discouraging him yet. I'm thinking about pounding some nails through a round board about the size of the hole and moving some dirt over all but about 3/4" of the nails. I would guess when he hops on that once that that would run him off.

I would set a snare trap, but with my luck I would end up bagging one of the neighbors cats and cause a big neighborhood dust up.

Any of you guys have any experience dealing with these useless vermin?

I tried everything to get rid of rabbits. My backyard was no problem (pellet gun) but the front yard I couldn't shoot because of neighbors freaking out. I tried motion detectors that sprayed water...motion detecting lights...letting my dog out the front door to chase them away..."scarecrows"...chemical deterrents...even a remote control car to chase them off the lawn...nothing worked long term. The other neat thing is a landscaper guy told me their poop is toxic to new grass...so they're not only eating your grass, they're killing any future grass at the same time. Finally took up the lawn and put down gravel...and bought rabbit resistant shrubs/flowers. Wish I had better news, but if you're in an area where they're reproducing uninhibited like I am, you're screwed.

Use household repellents. Cayenne pepper, human hair, dog hair, or manure on the ground near the garden or mixed with fertilizer can help deter rabbits. it destroys the tunnel but does the pressure or what ever it is kill the gopher?

Well this isn't good news. I'm in the same boat, if one enters the backyard, I have a tall fence and I can't be seen. Many a rabbit and squirrel have met there maker after venturing back there. MY front is the same as yours, although if I ever see him in the front during the day I'm going to say screw it and light him up anyway. If a neighbor sees me, I'll just smile and wave after letting out a Terry Tate WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

You're also right about where they poop, I tried planting new grass in one of those spots last year and couldn't get anything to grow. I guess I'll have to dig up the old soil before planting.

I didn't know about the poop. Is it a lot of poop? Too much nitrogen? Allelopathy? Acid? Wonder what's doing the killing.

I have no idea but it's like dumping HF acid on you lawn if there is enough of it. Piss of doom!

My story about shooting one in the front yard:

I have dual doors at the front of the house and an entrance way that conceals you from the street unless you're directly in front of the doors. One morning I'd had enough and I opened the doors, stood far back in the entrance way in my robe with pellet gun in hand and took aim at one of the bunnies...as luck would have it, one of the homes in my cul de sac was for sale and a realtor drove by with potential buyers in the car and they gawked at this weirdo with a rifle in his robe taking aim toward the street. Pretty sure that sale didn't take place that day.
