Overreaction Planet Vol. 15

I want my own thread for it this year. I'm probably going to do it every year. A nice little repository where I can glean through the annals of Chiefsplanet and get the pulse of our user base as the season unfolds from week to week. Hopefully it'll be a good time.

Wish I'd thought of this before the year started, but better late than never. Or not. I don't really give a shit. I've given an idea of what this thread will be about in post 12, but here is a PRIME example of the kinds of posts you can expect to see in Overreaction Planet.

What the hell does Clark do? The most that will happen is Reid and Sutton being fired, and that isn't fixing the crux of the problem. We're still stuck with AS. Clark isn't unloading him. He won't take that cap hit.

We have to ride this out, unfortunately.

Yup. And peters, smith, DJ, Berry, Howard, Bailey are all Quality starters for most other teams.

Peters and DJ are game changers and the rest aren't just quality starters, they're HIGH quality starters.

Hell.....the Chargers, whom i'm exposed to everyday, would kill to have ANY of our front seven players.

They have ONE guy in their front seven who could start for the Chiefs. MAYBE two.

I hate to point it out but Rodgers throws a ton of passes within 10-5 yards. He completed somewhere around 25-30 passes within 7 yards prior to the Monday night game. Smith is always passing within 7 yards except the WRs Rodgers throws to can block, catch, make defenders miss in space. I feel we need a physical WR corps to compliment Smith. Although I feel its too late for Smith and it should've been planned when they traded for him.

You're missing one key aspect: Rodgers can beat you deep and that threat is always there. It's hard to throw the short pass/screen game when opposing defenses know that's the ONLY thing you're going to do.

Rodgers throws short passes because it helps set up the deep game.

Smith throws short passes because it's all he can do.

It should've been planned from the beginning. Its not all he can do. He's a scared little shit, but he can throw the deep ball. It converted those 4th downs in Monday nights game.

Against a prevent defense.....

We can't sit here and praise Smith for shredding a prevent defense while shrugging off Mallet's 2nd half performance because of our "prevent defense".

All offseason we heard about how much the coaches emphasized the deep passing game. Lets not pretend that the Chiefs didn't prepare for it. It was a major fluff topic all training camp.

It's not occurring during the regular season for one reason....Smith.

Reid has a history of opening his offense and stretching the field.

Maclin has a history of stretching the field.

The only person is this trio who's proven over and over again through his career that he won't go deep is Alex.

Not Reid. Not Maclin. We've seen them do it. They have a legit history or doing it. Alex doesn't.

go back and watch the tape. what about Maclins 60 yard reception around 11 minutes in the 4th? that wasn't against prevent defense. I don't see any prevent defense even around the 5 minute mark in the 4th where Smith is finally throwing deep. They began the prevent defense on that final 4th down conversion. I'm not saying Smith is gonna get it. Its too late for that now and the Chiefs need to move on after this season.

What frustrates me is, prevent defense or not, Alex is a different QB with his back against the wall. Really far against the wall. End of 2013 we saw a really aggressive version of Alex Smith. It took a horrible defense to do that. At the end of the GB game, he was throwing in tight spots and pressing on throws.

Why doesn't he do this early in games? Why can't we have a working defense and an aggressive Alex at the same time? Alex has been doing this so long that I don't see it changing.

I 50% agree with what the 610 guys say: Reid is dictating the offense as we see it and knows Smith won't deviate from the plan. When it becomes desperation time, Reid tells him to sling the rock.

The other 50% because he's football cowardice personified.

It's not overreaction to think this team is doomed. Poor coaching, poor talent on the offensive line, significant problems with depth in the secondary, a QB who doesn't seem to be developing, and play calling for the "offense" that absolutely does him no favors. One of the best backs in the NFL being reduced by the play calling to a role player.

Where are we going to go from here? It's not overreaction, it's just a sober look at the situation.

Wait for 2018. New HC, different QB. They won't win a lot of games but hopefully rookies and second year guys show improvement as the year goes on.

Yes, agreed. We are just looking for signs of improvement this year unless the offense suddenly starts to gel. Obviously, this team isn't ready to contend yet as we had hoped.
