Short answers: yes and yes

Full version: I went through some pretty bad times over the last few years in a marriage that should have ended at least 5 years ago but just did this January (having kids makes you need to hang on longer than you probably should have). I got to point where I didn't care and stopped being active. Got up to about 340lbs before basically hit rock bottom and knew something had to change.
Now I'm eating healthier and lowering my daily caloric intake. Don't know how to cook so I signed up for Home Chef and that has really helped as well. I'm trying to make small but permanent changes to gradually lose the weight and keep it off. So far down 30 lbs.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean its not right. Even being muscular and fat is not healthy. Which is what I think most of you that are pissed about. Your heart has to work that much harder and its much easier for your tryglycerides to rise at a higher rate regardless of "how well you hold" your lbs. Also, the more body mass you carry makes you more prone to most forms of cancer.

There are, of course, certain conditions or metabolic states that make it harder to keep weight off. But I think for nearly everybody it's still very doable. Biggest problem by far is sugar and ignorance in terms of what reasonable sugar consumption is. To avoid putting on fat, on average a person needs to limit sugar to 24-36 g/day. Yet the average American probably triples that at least. A can of Coke alone is about 50.

Not to mention that a sluggish metabolism is generally a result of getting no exercise and bad eating and sleeping habits.

The people I know who are legitimately overweight? It's usually obvious why when I spend some time around them.

A little stubborn bellyfat can be extremely hard to get rid of, especially if you're over 30 and trying to gain muscle at the same time. But it ain't that hard to avoid obesity. Real obesity, not BMI obesity.
