Trump attacks protections for immigrants from ‘shithole’ countries

President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they floated restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to two people briefed on the meeting.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met Wednesday.

The comments left lawmakers taken aback, according to people familiar with their reactions. Sens. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) proposed cutting the visa lottery program by 50 percent and prioritizing countries already in the system, a White House official said.

A White House spokesman declined to offer an immediate comment on Trump’s remarks

Outlining a potential bipartisan deal, the lawmakers discussed restoring protections for countries that have been removed from the temporary protected status program while adding $1.5 billion for a border wall and making changes to the visa lottery system.

The administration announced this week that it was removing the protection for citizens of El Salvador.

Trump had seemed amenable to a deal earlier in the day during phone calls, aides said, but shifted his position in the meeting and did not seem interested.

Graham and Durbin thought they would be meeting with Trump alone and were surprised to find immigration hard-liners such as Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) at the meeting. The meeting was impromptu and came after phone calls Thursday morning, Capitol Hill aides said.

[White House: No deal yet on immigration]

After the meeting, Marc Short, Trump’s legislative aide, said the White House was nowhere near a bipartisan deal on immigration.

“We still think we can get there,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at the daily White House news briefing.

The only way for an illegal immigrant to get food stamps is on behalf of a US citizen child; there are about 4.5 million US citizen children with at least one illegal immigrant parent (as of 2010, source). In order for that statistic to be correct, every single one of those children would have to collect food stamps worth over $6,000 per month, and have their illegal parent pick them up.

2. The 95% figure comes from the testimony of a think tank fellow's testimony to Congress in 2004, in which she stated (unsourced and unverified) that "In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide in the first half of 2004 (which totaled 1,200 to 1,500) targeted illegal aliens." (source). Note the word 'outstanding' - that's not every once issued in that time frame, it's the ones that are still open, and those of illegal immigrants are much more likely to stay open forever because they're much more likely to flee the country. This statistic makes it seem like of every 20 murders in LA, 19 of them are committed by an illegal immigrant, which is misleading at best.

3. About 4% of illegal immigrants are working in "Farming, fishing, and forestry" (source) but it doesn't say how many are "picking crops". Illegal immigrants aren't eligible for welfare, but they may get some on behalf of their children, for which the numbers will turn out about like number 1, above.

4. About 8% nationwide (source). In California, about 48% of all births are to Hispanics and another 2 to 'multiethnic' (source), but even if every one of them was illegal, which they weren't, it would still be over 15% short.

5. There are about 9.78 million people in HUD properties as of 2016 (source), 60% of which would be 5.868 million of 11-ish million illegal immigrants on HUD properties. About 3.8% of illegal immigrant families receive housing assistance (source), which calculates out to about 418,000, so the figure is off by about a factor of 14 or so.

6. About 12.3% of California students have at least one immigrant parent (source), and about 81% of those are US citizens, using a nationwide ratio (source). That means about 2.3% rather than 39%. Way off.

7. The LAPD Most Wanted list has 219 people on it and I count 155 with Hispanic names, which isn't far from 75%, but the site doesn't list immigration status (source). Also will have the same issue as #2 - those who flee the country, which illegal immigrants would tend to do, will stay on that list for a longer time.

8. There are about 1.4 million active gang members in the US right now (source). If this were to be true, about 750,000 illegal immigrants (about 7% of the 11 million total, and including children) would have to be in gangs. Also, back to that testimony from 14 years ago, another unsourced stat in there tells of an LA area gang that is about 60% illegal immigrants, but that is just one gang.

Summary:
- Don't use memes.
- These numbers are ridiculous and fake.
- You can do better than that.
Uhhhh. if 42,000 people got food stamps and it costs 63 billion per month, each person who got food stamps cost 1.5 million per month. I don't think your numbers are correct.
