Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

I like to refer to them as standard capacity magazines myself.

That would save me between $0.03 and $0.05 per round from the cost of new ammo, once shipping is added in.

That's not a huge savings, but I'll probably start out that way and gradually acquire the equipment necessary to recondition my own brass.
The best deal on 223 is usually the overrun military stuff that sells for roughly $7.00 per box (or at least did last month) of 20. If you buy it in bulk it is probably more like $6.25 per box of 20.

I load 223 for $12 per box of 50. That is a pretty dramatic savings increase in my mind. Particularly when you start counting in the accuracy increase. When you reload ammunition, you can tailor make it for your gun's chamber, rifling, lede, etc. It has been my experience that most cheap factory 223 ammunition is about 3 MOA. Meaning, if you were perfect, at 100 yards, you would have a 3 inch group. My rifle will shoot 1/2 MOA. I won't tolerate crap ammunition screwing up my day. I can handload 1/2 MOA (or better) ammunition all day. It isn't even that hard. If you compared reloads to match quality ammunition (which generally is still less accurate than reloads) the savings would be much more evident.

Additionally, the savings in reloading is much less evident (though still good) in 223 and 9mm than any other caliber. Reload 45 acp or 30-06 or in my case some odd cartridges like 7.5x55 Swiss or 6.5x55 Swede, and the savings are immediately apparent.

I figure on 9mm I save $3-5. But on 45 ACP, I can make a box of 50 for $5.50. Try buying 45 ACP for less than $15 a box. Likewise, I can reload 7.5x55 for $15 a box. When I can find it (which is rare), it always costs me at least $20.

You are definitely going to want to do your own brass prep. If you are worried about money up front, I would buy the Lee case trimmer for 223 and use it. You need a cutter and the caliber specific pilot. It is $10 total or something like that. You don't need to worry too much about chamfering and the rest, but that is cheap too.

LiveSteam - I have loaded one box of 45-70 at my uncle's house. I don't own a 45-70 though. I reload 9mm, 38 Special, 357 Magnum, 40 Smith and Wesson, 45 ACP, 223 Remington, 6.5x55 Swede, 30 Carbine, 7.5x55 Swiss. I have access to dies in other calibers, but I own all the components/dies for the calibers above.

Dunit35 - I have the STR on my rifle and it I love it.

Thanks! It's just an Romanian WASR that I removed all the shitty wood and replaced with tactical pieces. One bonus with removing the wood is it doesn't weigh as much now.

I purchased all the furniture from Cheaper Than Dirt. All the parts I used are Tapco but there are other options on the Cheaper Than Dirt website. Most of the parts fit well but I did have to do a little trimming on the hand guard to make it fit. Very little though.

Stock: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/AKS-160

Pistol Grip: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/AKS-498

Hand Guard: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/AKS-523

Edit: I didn't replace the pistol grip. It's been awhile since I did this and forgot that the original WASR had the grip already.

You have Swiss k-31? Do you like the the straight pull action? I have never even held one let alone work the action. I have read about them, seen pics & find them to be a pretty neat mill surp. It looks like a very heavy rifle to. But looks can be deceiving

So I decided to take advantage of the weather today and cleaned and oiled my rifle for the winter. As I was doing it, I got to wondering how you guys go about cleaning your guns. How clean is clean in your book? Any "must-haves" as far as solutions, tools, etc? What are your favorite things? If this has already been covered in this monster of a thread, I sincerely apologize.

LiveSteam -

I have a Swiss Karabiner model 1911. It was the precursor to the k31 and is more rare, but very similar. Most people couldnt tell them apart.

I love it. It shoots fantastic, and frankly no company could build that rifle today for under a grand. It really is a swiss watch of a rifle. I highly recommend grabbing one or a k31. The k31 has a little shorter bolt throw, which helps maintain cheek weld. I paid $250. You can get a k31 for $300 regularly.

The results speak for themselves too. K31, k11, and swedish mausers always win the old bolt gun military rifle divisions at camp perry.

The only complaints I have are that peep sights are vastly superior to tangent sights. There are diopters available for the swiss rifles, but they cost more than I paid for the rifle. It is also a pain to mount a scope. A swiss rifle with diopter sights would be a formidable rifle. Ive shot good groups out tp 300 yards with mine, but I am sure I could halve them with peep sights.

I use breakfree clp, I run a wet boresnake through the barrel, put oil on the part before the bristles, and pull it through twice, the bolt gets cleaned and lubed with a shop towel and some clp, maybe use a few q-tips if there is any gunk build up.
I add a thin coating of clp afterwards to all the moveable surfaces.
I maybe spend 10 min max per weapon and typically no more than 3-5min each including disassembly.

I dnt shoot corrosive ammo so I only clean my modern day firearms every now & then. I dnt shoot them much anymore. Leave light oil on the metal & safe queen. I use Hoppe's Elite or # 9 maybe every 300 - 500 rounds.

My black powders revolvers get stripped down the minute I get home & then hot soapy water to clean, light oil everything, put back together & put away. They get used an awful lot.

I learned cleaning the lead out of my 22 cal pellet rifle really hurt the accuracy. I wont ever clean it again.
