Conner Frankamp chooses Wichita State to continue basketball career

Frankamp, the City League’s career scoring leader, also considered Colorado and Creighton. He played his freshman season at Kansas before deciding to leave the basketball program in October.

Frankamp must enroll for the second semester at a new school in order to be eligible after the first semester of the 2015-16 school year. He would have the rest of that season to play, as well as the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

“I think Coach (Gregg) Marshall can improve my game quite a bit,” Frankamp said. “I’ve been very impressed with how Ron (Baker) and Fred (VanVleet) have developed as players. I think they have a good chance to get to the league (NBA).”

Frankamp averaged 2.5 points in 8.3 minutes last season, but was at his best in the NCAA Tournament, posting his two double-digit games of the year with 10 points in an 80-69 win over Eastern Kentucky and 12 points in a 60-57 loss to Stanford.

Frankamp, a graduate of North High and a consensus top 40 recruit in the class of 2013, will remain at Kansas through the fall semester.

He scored 2,275 points at North and played on the under-17 USA Basketball team that won a gold medal in the 2012 FIBA World Championships. Rivals.com ranked him No. 34 in the class of 2013 and ESPN ranked him No. 46. He averaged 31.1 points, 3.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds as a senior.

Underdogs for the 1st time since our game at St Louis last year. As long as our bigs play well, I see us winning a close one. But wouldnt be shocked at all if this is a game we lose.

Conner's largest problem (moreso than his Dad) was that he was simply overwhelmed by the speed of the college game. He was a major liability on defense, had no ability to drive into the lane, and had to step into his shots before taking a three (the biggest condemnation for a player of his skillset). For a guy marketed as a pure shooter, he ended up with a worse 3 PT% (.313) than two of KU's other (non-starting) freshman (Mason .327, Greene .333)

It's going to take a lot of work to get Conner to the point of being a catch and release shooter. Is it possible that Marshall accelerates Frankamp's timeline since he's now against lesser competition in the MVC? Definitely, but I hope Conner doesn't have to wait too long, because he and his pa seemed to bristle at that notion here at KU.

I went to some of his HS games and it was crazy to see how much he struggled shooting for KU. I agree that it was him being a much better off the dribble shooter than spot up shooter, which is basically all I ever saw him do in HS. Hopefully he can develop his spot up game more.

Frankamp is a very good shooter... off the bounce. He cannot catch and shoot yet - maybe that will change and maybe it won't. But mark my words - when you see him pull up without a dribble first, you can bank on a miss. Watch when he pump fakes, has one step aside dribble, and then shoots... much better.
