Favorite Classical Music Piece

I've been listening to Mozart's "Requiem" quite a bit lately. I also have a particular soft spot for Bach's "Air for G-String" (har har) and Beeth-oven's "Moonlight Sonata". I guess "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber (the "Platoon Theme" could apply as well)

What are your favorite pieces from said genre?

Although (and perhaps because) it is one of the most oft-redone classical pieces, I've always loved "Carmina Burana." TSO does a killer version of it on their new cd Night Castle, if they ever get around to releasing the damn thing! I also love the Pere Gynt Suite, by Grieg.

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber

The uninitiated may remember it being the sorrowful soundtrack used in the movies 'Platoon' and 'The Elephant Man'.

Long Form

Moussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition [probably my overall favorite of any piece or set of pieces] - Great Gate of Kiev is without a doubt the pinnacle of music, for me. Simple, straightforword, yet enduringly moving.

Dvorak - Symphony 9 "From the New World" - particularly the Largo movement.
Handel - Messiah, Music for Royal Fireworks
Orff - Carmina Burana
Holst - The Planets
Verdi - Requiem

Medium form
Tchiakovsky - 1812 Overture, Romeo & Juliet
Sibelius - Finlandia

Ditto. Yes, it's cliche, but it still gets my blood pumping every time I hear it.

Nazis.

Actually, for pure adreneline, I'd go with Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem.

I love TSO and found this tidbit on Night Castle FWIW:

Night Castle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Night Castle is a future album of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra that is currently in production. It will include a version of "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, which was previewed live by the band since 2004. A release is planned for summer of 2007. In an interview with Rockmymonkey.com, Jon Oliva confirmed that he will be recording vocal parts for the album (the last Trans-Siberian Orchestra album to feature Oliva's vocals was 2000's Beethoven's Last Night). Kurdt Vanderhoof of Metal Church will also contribute guitar parts to the album. Jeff Plate, who has played with Savatage and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, played drums on Metal Church's latest album, A Light In The Dark (album).

[edit] Release

During recent performances of their 2006 tour, Chris Caffery has stated that production of Night Castle is currently behind schedule, due largely to TSO's perfectionism. This delay echoes the two-year delay in the release of Beethoven's Last Night and the year-long delay in the release of The Lost Christmas Eve. The delay of Night Castle's release is also referenced in tour programs. No official statements have been made as to the expected length of the delay, and TSO has requested patience from their fans regarding the album's release.

Hmmm, very interesting! Kurdt Vanderhoof, Alex Skolnick, Al Pitrelli ... all we need now is John Petrucci and we'd have a real who's who of metal guitar luminaries! If only we could resurrect Chris Oliva from the dead.
