Mock Draft (1/20)

Some assumptions, now that we know the coaching staff and that we're keeping the 3-4 in more of a 1-gap formation.

1. Quinn, Hillis, and Dorsey walk. Tyson Jackson is cut.

2. Alex Smith is signed by the Chiefs to a decently-sized 2-year deal. Cassel is kept with the understanding that he is a backup only.

3. Bowe and Albert are resigned.

4. Chiefs get a 3rd comp pick for Carr, and a 7th for Barry Richardson.

5. Chiefs score a big get by bringing in ILB Brad Jones from the Packers.

1. DE/DT Star Lotulelei, Utah

There is no good QB value in this draft, which is massively disappointing. In one sense, there is no better time to start the clean slate rebuild than 2013. So much of the offense is put together, basically WR is about the only serious place we need to build other than the critical QB position. But not only is there no good QB to take in the first, there's no I assume the three QBs that stand any chance of a legit career (Smith, Wilson, and Barkley) will be drafted late in the first. And there are huge questions with each.

So Reid goes for the most critical position on the 1-gap 3-4, which is the DE position. Dorsey and Jackson are out, Lotulelei and Poe are in, which combined with Jerrell Powe should create one athletic, mean defensive front.

2. WR Terrance Williams, Baylor

Williams is 1st round value, but a couple players of 1st round value always find a way to fall to the second. He's as sure a thing as you're going to get here, as his production has been absolutely off the charts and consistent across absolutely all competition. He's a can't-miss, and combined with a WR corps of Bowe, Baldwin, and Breaston (with McCluster/Wylie in the slot) we should have a pretty good corps.

3. CB David Amerson, North Carolina State

Had to take one eventually. The value gets really good at CB in the third. Amerson is a really tall, really athletic corner who, like all NC State players, is flawless on measurables but raw as shit.

This will give the Chiefs competition at starter against Javier Arenas, whom Amerson has by about half a foot. Andy Reid loves pressure corners on his defenses, so Amerson at least has the tools for the part.

3. SS Robert Lester, Alabama

Lester comes from a grade-A program on college football's toughest defense. He's a true strong safety, as opposed to the converted Eric Berry. At the very least he gives the team more talent in their dime packages.

4. OLB Sean Porter, Texas A&M

Chiefs get a dream and Porter falls -- what great value here atop the 4th. Porter is a jack-of-all-linebacker-trades. He's played the 4-3 scheme as an OLB, meaning he can tackle, track receivers, and play the flats. But he also excelled behind Von Miller when A&M played the 3-4 as a passrusher. The Chiefs need more depth behind Hali and Houston, as well as behind Jones and Johnson. Porter can play three out of four LB positions on this defense.

5. CB/KR Terry Hawthorne, Illinois

A smart overachiever at Illinois, Hawthorne creates even more competition in our secondary, which can't be a bad thing. He's also a very effective kick returner.

6. OG Blaize Foltz, TCU

Foltz is a road-grader. Plowed the way for an unbelievable running attack a year ago, and in the few games I watched this year, played even stiff competition straight-freaking-up. Interior OL depth is needed badly.

7. S Daimion Stafford, Nebraska

Taking a swing here. I liked Stafford's work this year, I think he has some tools we can develop.

7. NT Montori Hughes, Tennessee-Martin

This is a massive character flag here, but Reid just wants hard workers. Maybe that's Hughes, maybe it isn't. I'm not sure. But Hughes is a powerful 330 lber who thrives in the shit of the trenches. He was kicked off Tennessee's squad and suspended for a year, but ****ed shit up at TM. Why not?

I give you permission to kill me. If we don't draft one and have Alex Smith and Matt Cassel that is a horrible sign of things to come, not just in 2013. I don't see anyway we don't draft a QB somewhere in the draft.

Next time you ever do a mock that highlights us keeping matt castle, getting alex smith, and drafting a DT #1 overall instead of a QB, just go ahead and hit yourself over the head with a sledgehammer. It's like the stupid you post in DC infected your ability to comprehend football. This is like asking Monte Teo for advice on dating.

I also propose a ban for the next muffinhead who ever brings up Matt Cassle being on this team in the future, let alone suggests we draft a DT at #1. And we need to all get together as a community and publicly beat the ****ing dumb out of any idiot who suggest we don't even try to draft a QB in this draft at all.

This sounds like what Scott Pioli would do. Its the same thing the Chiefs have done for...well, forever. We are not going to find the next Len Dawson. Additionally on a team that averaged 13.2 points per game you use 7 of 9 draft picks on defense including the third DT chosen in the last 3 drafts. You could say the D was pretty bad but 37 turnovers by the offense will do that to you. Certainly we need another corner an ILB, and more safety help, but that's overboard for a team so bereft of talent on the offensive side of the ball. Just how many guards do we need on this team?

If we sign Alex Smith and draft Star #1, you have just written off the next three years of the Chiefs future. The only good thing about these assumptions is that it will mean we could be picking #1 for the next few years. The problem is there will be few fans left. While Alex Smith will seem like Matt Cassel on a good day initially, Chiefs fans still living in the past will realize that a mediocre QB cannot carry a team. A DT cannot carry a team. A LT cannot carry a team.

A QB carries the team on his shoulders. The rest are just a supporting cast. As such, the #1 pick in any draft has to be a QB unless EVERY prospect is of the talent level of Alex Smith and Matt Cassel.

The real problem is that all of our real talent will be pretty damn old in 3 years.
