Why the GOP tax bill is depressing to me.

Our president has a 35% approval rate.
The GOP has a 24% approval rate.
Congress has a 16% approval rate.

And they're pushing through a tax bill that has 29% support.

This makes no sense.

In a democracy, you are supposed to push for stuff that at least has a chance to be popular during non-emergency times, especially if you are insanely unpopular.

So, how does this make sense? Because the GOP, particularly the House GOP, believes it has properly insulated itself from democratic punishments (i.e. being voted out of power).
  • They have gerrymandered the House, and the Senate favors small, rural states.
  • Campaign finance restrictions have been destroyed by GOP judges to give the wealthy more control over candidates and politicians.
By all accounts -- we're looking at a wave election in 2018 if things continue the way they're going. And even after a wave it's still not remotely clear if Democrats can even barely take back the majority in the House, and they almost certainly won't in the Senate.

I think this is all pretty depressing and antithetical to how a representative, responsive government is supposed to act.

Yeah...I was going to post it Thursday, but I thought why bother. It'll just turn into another bitchfest.

Since Lewdog asked, I figured I try to find it for him...even though he's ignored me for two years since my MSU Bobcats have beaten his UM Griz the last two games.

(Sorry, I had to throw that jab in there in case he pops back in here)

This.

The voters can change their own states taxes if they want. Use your vote. That shouldn't effect what others pay for their fed taxes.

49% when it passed

Tax bill is 29%

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...b0469e883fab6/

Which is on it's way to being even more unpopular.

And will effect far more people than the ACA ever did.

And the approval rating for the ACA was horrific at the end. Big reason why Trump won.

People hated it.

I'd bet most business owners lean to the right.

You said most of the benefit of the tax cuts will go to blue states. But the business cuts will go to the minority in that state. These tax cuts are for business owners and the wealthy, regardless of how the state voted.

But I was responding to Lex who was arguing that this tax bill is victimizing people in blue states.

My first point is that the people who are getting the raw deal (from Lex's point of view) are mostly the people with business or investment interests, a large portion of whom live in blue states. Those are the people who make enough money for SALT and mortgage interest deductions to matter after the standard deduction is doubled. If your theory is right, those people mostly lean right even though many of them are in blue states.

My second point is that even though those relatively high income people are potentially losers on the individual tax side, many of them are still benefiting on the business tax side.

Why should I care if people hate this? People hate taking medicine until it makes them feel better. That doesn't mean taking medicine isn't the right thing to do.

The truth is that the American Revolution, itself, was very unpopular. but that doesn't mean it was the wrong thing to do.

This doesn't go far enough, but it is fundamentally the right thing to do. People should be able to keep more of what they earn.
