Mock (9/3)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs finish 5-11 and end up picking #7. Andy Reid, John Dorsey, Pederson and Sutton are all retained. Because we are the Chiefs.

2. The team fails to extend OLB Justin Houston and have to franchise tag him. Because we are the Chiefs. They do, however, extend S Eric Berry at some point over the next 12 months for about $8m a year.

3. The Chiefs re-sign DE Allen Bailey to a 3-year, $13m ($3m guaranteed) deal.

4. The Chiefs cut WR Donnie Avery, OT Donald Stephenson, TE Anthony Fasano, OLB Tamba Hali, CB Sean Smith, and CB Ron Parker.

5. The Chiefs tender OLB Josh Martin.

6. The Chiefs let walk WR Kyle Williams, WR Junior Hemingway, OT Ryan Harris and C Rodney Hudson.

7. The Chiefs re-sign FB Anthony Sherman, CB Chris Owens, LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

8. The Chiefs sign WR Jerrel Jernigan (Giants) to a 2 year, $6m deal, OT Orlando Franklin (Broncos) to a 4 year, $18m ($8m guaranteed) deal, and S Devin McCourty (Patriots) to a 4 year, $20m ($9m guaranteed) deal.

9. They receive four compensatory picks: a 3rd, a 4th, a 5th, and a 6th.

On with the show:

1. WR Sammie Coates, Auburn

Looks like the next Sammy Watkins, but with better deep threat ability.

2. CB Trae Waynes, Michigan State

Looks like a Phillips Gaines clone. Except, you know, not terrible.

3. OG Tre' Jackson, Florida State

A pure right guard. Massive, Geoff Schwartz like frame that makes him a force in the run game.

3. TE Jeff Heuerman, Ohio State

A natural athlete and an accomplished blocker that is only scraping at his potential right now.

4. CB Cam Thomas, Western Kentucky

The brightest star on the nation's best secondary amongst smaller programs. 6'1" with tremendous ball skills.

4. WR Titus Davis, Central Michigan

A jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none prospect. Very smooth route runner, very smart in exploiting zones. Can disappear against press-man, however.

5. DE Travis Raciti, San Jose State

Perfect John Dorsey pick -- a guy with outstanding physical tools who will need a year or two to marinate his technique for his mammoth 6'5, 290 lbs frame.

5. C Jake Smith, Louisville

Perfect technician at center. Lacks Eric Kush's explosiveness, but he is a deft pass defender.

6. OLB Nate Orchard, Utah

Another pure Dorsey pick. Orchard is just learning the passrush position, having been recruited to Utah as a WR.

6. NT Jeffrey Whitaker, Auburn

A mountain of a man at 330+ lbs, the Chiefs need more beef on their DL.

7. OT Rob Havenstein, Wisconsin

Phil Loadholt upside.

I don't see much improvement on that roster. It has more upside, but still a butt **** of unprovens and nothing we can point to as definitive progress. Only difference is we're depending on drafted rookies for quality play instead of JAGs

I haven't really studied this class yet. How talented is it?

To be blunt, no shit. Of course a draft class is going to be unproven.

Yeah, and you accompany that with this:

Quote:
The Chiefs cut WR Donnie Avery, OT Donald Stephenson, TE Anthony Fasano, OLB Tamba Hali, CB Sean Smith, and CB Ron Parker.
= no change from last year to this year

The defensive coaching staff won't survive 2014.

It's too bad we didn't fire Sutton and hire Horton.
