***The Official 2014 Gardening Thread***

So what is everyone planting this year? Trying anything new or different? I've already got potatoes in the ground and I'm trying an herb garden this year. I've started cilantro, oregano, and basil in planter pots from seed and will transfer to a 55 gallon drum cut in half length wise and laid on its side with drain holes.

Overall I'm going with tomatoes, green beans, peppers(jalapeņo/bell), broccoli, lettuce, and the aforementioned potatoes.

Sounds awesome! Post pictures. Hard to imagine this stuff without them. We can all learn.

Can't believe how easy growing cherry tomatoes are. I've put a handful on my salad every night for the past two weeks. They taste great warm! I'm not a green thumb so this is cool.

If I get things set up so I can upload pics, I'll gladly do that. I've never bothered with that before, but maybe this is the time.

In the meantime (or alternative), this is what I just got in:

This is coming under separate shipping and will be for my brother's place:

Finally got around to using some leftover bricks we took out around the border of the grass that use to be in the backyard. We removed all the grass last year and planted a bunch of trees, shrubs and cacti back there. This side of the yard gets early morning and early afternoon sun but afternoon shade which is key with how hot it gets here. The end of the drip line comes out on the other side of that pool pump in the picture. I am going to run it behind the pump and to the new garden bed. I'll add some 2 gallon/hour emitters and should be relatively easy to keep up with the water most of the year. Bed is 9'x4'. Filled with top soil and steer manure.

I've been told you can grow stuff all year here so I think this will get lots of use. You can even see my red and pink Hibiscus plants still blooming even though it's been in the 30's and 40's at night here lately. Just today I picked 20 peppers off my pepper plant an it's middle of December! I also have some mid sized early girl tomatoes that are still blooming and setting in a 5 gallon plastic bucket. Homemade salsa coming up!

Need to get a few more bags of dirt for the bed.

house is 90 + years old. was tired of remodeling.

wasn't going to have kids, so we made a pool. then we were blessed. too many friends and stories of poolside tragedies. etc etc.

I drove by the other day, the current peeps didn't open the pool this year, and the sunroom (on a 2nd floor) looks to be collapsing.

the thing that kills me is that I had that house looking like storybook ending. but just couldn't keep up with the maintenance.

my garden at my new house is a real treat. i'll post some stuff this spring. garden is done for the year now.

Sounds like a cool ass house!

Please post some garden shit here. I can grow stuff year round here but really don't know what the **** I am doing. I've never done much before. I have a small space to work with here but want to grow a few things. Reading about grapes currently and thinking I can trellis some stuff on the back wall for some extra growth potential without using all my space.

If you're going to put up a trellis get green beans. They're easier to grow and a hell of a lot quicker payoff.

I love green beans.
