my dog died somewhat out of the blue today.

Has anybody had a somewhat young dog (6 years) die within 10 hours of being completely healthy? got up this morning and let him out and he was chipper as always, came in and peed right on the carpet and i let him out again because he had never done that before. This time he just went outside and laid down, which he never does either, he's always running around as happy as can be. Next I know he's throwing up ever hour or so and became very lethargic. all this started at about 10 this morning, started throwing up and became lethargic at noonish, tried getting him to drink, which he did until about 3 when no matter what he put in his stomach it came right back up, went downstairs at about 5 and noticed he hadnt moved from the same spot for over an hour and ran upstairs debating if i needed to take him to a 24 hour emergency vet and my girlfriend came over and we were sitting with him and his breathing became rather labored so I said im getting the car, we're going right now! And as soon as I got the car started up my girlfriend ran out screaming that I had to come in right now!! So I ran in and watched my best friend take the last few gasps of his wonderful life...

does anybody have any ideas what the **** could have happened? i mean symptoms start between 10-12 and dog dies at 6:40... How is that possible? Ive looked everywhere for anything poisonous that he could have gotten in to but found nothing. Anything to bring peace back to thew house, any vets on here?

That was my thought, (poison). A friend of ours lost their dog because it got into some poison in their garage. Symptoms were very similar, (vomiting, urination, lethargic, etc.).

Sucks man.

Sounds a little like gastric torsion (stomach flipping over). Large chest cavity?

My understanding with obstructions is that most dogs won't even try to drink with an obstruction, whereas with torsion you'll get the drinking and vomiting; just can't keep anything down.

Sorry about your loss. I hope whatever you find out helps.

Some ****sticks soak sponges in blood and leave them out for dogs to ingest. The dog can't pass the sponge and die. It sucks like hell to lose a pet.

Damn. Sorry for your loss.

I would be totally demolished if Chief Dog did that.

FWIW, he did eat some wood (dumbass), and got an obstruction somewhere in his GI tract. It wasn't a huge deal, but he threw up a couple times and wife freaked. The vet massaged it around a bit and gave him a laxative (not sure why, but he never got the runs) and was fine pretty much right after she massaged his guts.

If it was an obstruction, I'd think it would have ruptured something. Just an obstruction wouldn't make him go downhill like that I wouldn't think. I know virtually nothing about vet biology, but that's my take.

I had a dog that got sick suddenly once. It was back in college and I was a dog breeder, and went up to see him quite often.

I noticed it as soon as I opened the door to let her back in the house she didn't come to me but was just lying on the ground. Turned out her stomach flipped and was cutting everything off, including her air; she was having problems breathing and moving around.

They stapled her stomach to each side of her rib cage and she ended up being ok. But losing a pet always sucks. Sorry for your loss.

Lost my dog right on a year ago to 'idiopathic seizures.' Around Christmas, he had a couple of incidents where he's get overexcited for his treat and kind of just fall over from a crouch, a couple weeks later he was falling over and wetting himself once or twice a week. Didn't make it to the end of January. He was 12 yo and the vets had nothing for him, it was just something that happened to some dogs.

I had a 4-year-old dog get sick, took him to the vet, he gave him a steroid shot, that perked him up for a couple of days, then when it wore off he reverted. Next morning, he could barely move, and I was trying to get him to get up and go to the vet again, he dropped dead right in front of me.

Vet did a necropsy but could never figure out what it was.
