To the OP, the only realistic answer was to sign Mathis. Other than that Drafting morse, and trading for Grubbs were absolutely the right moves. Nothing else could of been done. I don't know how it's going to work out, but getting Grubbs was absolutely perfect. People are going to be amazed at how much better fisher will look with him beside Grubbs.

I remember reading about it after the draft. I think he made something like $1.5 million for three years as an UDFA but it was all guaranteed. I can't remember the particulars, but it seemed a much more favorable position than actually being drafted in the 6th, 7th rounds.

Typically yes. He actually got quite a bit more, and got to choose where he wanted to go. Which after not getting drafted was the appeal.

interesting... Is that done often? Do guys that expect to go higher threaten to not sign if they slide and then take their chances in free agency? Seems like more guys would do this and the NFL would take steps to prevent it.

No, it's as close to a fact as you can make. He would of lost money by signing. He could of sat out the year and been drafted no lower than the 3rd round next year. Yes, your point is valid, there is no guarantee he wouldn't of signed but if someone thought he was bluffing like the pats, Seahawks, or even Cowboys, they would of drafted him.

I've personally never heard of. Of course I don't remember a first round projected pick being involved Ina murder investigation during draft week. I have heard of players that are fringe draft players having their agents request not to be drafted so the can go as an udfa to a team that gives them the best chance to make a team.

Really? That seems like a pretty stupid move by an agent.

Instead of being drafted into a potential bad situation (shitty team, wrong scheme, etc.), he got to choose his landing spot. For him, he couldn't have ended up in a better position than a team like the Cowboys. He'll be playing alongside four studs, blocking for a stud QB, getting tons of media exposure, and will likely challenge for a division title at the least. He should really have a great opportunity to maximize his earning potential on his second contract. |
