Well, it probably is now, but only because so many people have placed it on a pedestal to be bowed down to.

When they started figuring out the proper tweaks to WAR a couple years after it was introduced, it was a hugely helpful addition to the advanced stats, and its still very valuable as long as you understand its limitations.

I think the studies I've seen say that the windup doesn't actually do anything for you, its just tradition.
If one of my twins is a boy, I will teach him to pitch exclusively from the stretch. I'll be teaching drive-and-drop mechanics with a stepover (extra long front step), which works really well out of the stretch.

The windup only helps IF you are able to work in some deception out of it. Think Chris Sale or Alex Wood... but a lot of those deceptive windups also make you more susceptible to injury...

I took the extra long step and had a little bit of a wrist wrap, so I was pretty deceptive. But I also had a shoulder drag issue with my mechanics AND threw cross body, which is probably why my rotator cuff went.

Looking back at it now, I had all sorts of red flags for injury issues. Nice to know if I have a player, I can hopefully help him avoid those things.

The pitches that are just off the strike zone are now being identified... because they're used to the deception.

Man, though... Lefties with a good changeup they can throw for strikes have it made.
