Country Club Plaza = Bannister Mall part 2?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - More than 100 teens converged on the Country Club Plaza Saturday night and created a ruckus for patrons and a lot of work for Kansas City police officers.

Stories like those about the plaza have been rolling in for the last year or longer. At one point there was a shooting and they have put a curfew in place


I remember years ago bannister mall area was thriving. Hypermart and all the other surrounding stores were very popular and always busy. Crime slowly strangled the area and people chose to go elsewhere. The whole place turned into a ghost town. Obviously Cerner is building there now but the question I pose is simple

There are a lot of options other than the plaza around KC so...

Will the Plaza die the same way the Bannister area did?

#1-I NEVER said the CC area was going to turn into crime plagued area

#2-I've seen first hand growing up what happens to a nice city when crime skyrockets and it drove my family and many others to move out away from where I was born

#3-Just because now I chose to live in a very nice and affluent area of the country with a low crime rate doesn't mean I haven't seen plenty of crime or don't understand the impact

#4-Well if this thread is only open to people who live and work in the CC Plaza so be it but my statement talks in general terms about what happens when these seeming harmless little gangs grow and grow until they snuff out a thriving area.

Having owned and operated a store at Bannister Mall from 1994-2000, I do know that when the bad element moves in (either living OR loitering) it WILL kill an area, and Zach if you think that those areas are immune to it, you are foolish. CC is NOT above being run down, nor is the P&L or Westport.

It never happens all at once. It gets a little worse for a time being as people tolerate it when they shouldn't, thinking it will go away by itself. It's human nature to push the limits and if you let people push and push and push, then you have a big problem that slowly developed over time.

I've seen some nice areas around the country with a bar and restaurant district go downhill because the behavior was allowed to get worse and worse and worse, then finally lost liquor licenses and business shuttered and people who lived in the area for years sold their houses from all the noise and disturbances.

That culture isn't there. Westport? Thriving. Plaza? Doing great. P+L is different because they are dumb with how they do their business.

and the Plaza is nipping it in the bud, which is what Bannister Mall should have done.
