Am I wrong, or should we be rooting for Alex this year?

So, the Chiefs gave up their 27 this year in round one. And a hypothetically placed round one next year. Plus a third. In this one instance, we need Alex to excel as it lessens the burden on the front office for next years draft. Were the Chiefs to tank, then Buffalo could end up with the number 1 pick next year, and the first pick in the 3rd round. Whereas if the Chiefs win, Buffalo's new picks are late round or worst, 32 overall, and we bitch a little bit less about Mister Smith.

Win Win?

Spoiler!

Yeah....winning 6 games doesn't do shit. Sure it pretty much seals Smith's fate but anything less than an AFC Championship game appearance seals his fate. We don't NEED a high 2nd round pick. And honestly it's going to look bad if we go 6-10 and give the Bills a top 15 pick in the 1st round because all you're going to hear during the offseason is that the Chiefs should have drafted a playmaker for Smith in 2017 and waited on a QB.

Yeah, very few teams just blow through the door without knocking on it first.

Hopefully some of these post-season failures and some changes up front will at least convince the DL to show up this time around. Smith has really put a ceiling on the offense in the post-season but we know what he is.

But my biggest disappointment by FAR in the last two post-seasons has been the completely ineffective play of our defensive line.
Atleast this last year, they have somewhat of an excuse in that it was basically street free agents playing the Steelers.

It would be nice for Houston and company to actually be healthy and ready to go in January/Feb.

The young guys need to consistently get to and win in the playoffs to break thru. Just getting that mentality that its' not a big deal anymore.

And there will be absolutely no question what to do with that $20 mil owed Alex Smith.

2017 just a 16-game preseason for 2018.

The problem is there's some VERY VERY clueless casual football fans on here who probably only watch the Chiefs and don't even watch every week but think they know about stuff because they read the flawed PFF. Some hated Cassel from the begging or adapted early on to hate him so they look like they know what they were talking about. Along came Alex Smith and here we are nearly a decade later with the same stupid discussion. The Chiefs gain nothing by tanking. This isn't 2008 or 2012. Grow up.

No, we wouldn't. The only way Smith gets a 2-3 year extension is if he wins a ring and Mahomes ends up being a disaster/injured

Windows in the NFL open sooner than you realize and closer faster than you expect.

The Chiefs have had a 3-year window. They missed the playoffs once and shit the bed twice. The only reason it 'wasn't a big deal' for some of us in real-time was that many felt that a 3-year rebuild was a minimum and so the playoff appearance in year 1, etc... was just icing on the cake.

No, that's not really how it goes. This team will be significantly different than it is now in 3 years. The guts of this team are all in the 28 years old range. Berry, Houston, Maclin, Kelce and Schwartz will all play this season at 28 or 29 years old. That's their prime. Obviously Hali, DJ and Smith are older still.

Sure, there are young guys behind them but when those guys are running the show, that's a new team. That's a new 'window'. The window on this team will close much faster than you think. They can't be pissing away a year because that's how you end up as the Bengals. "Well we didn't expect to be there this year. We didn't expect to be there this year. We thought we'd get there this year but hey, next year's our year. Oh shit...we might suck now...."

You cannot backslide in this league. Time is far too precious of a commodity.

I odn't necessarily disagree, but the CHiefs as a franchise have that "oh shit" mentality it seems.

Luckily, this coaching staff and front office are and or have turned that around but it's time to take the next step. Hopefully that starts this season, but as you've said, they've missed 2 chances.

The best hedge against that is Reid's football mortality (hell, maybe his regular mortality).

I still think Reid's as focused on that championship as he's ever been. I think he's getting a little closer to that Schottenheimer crazy that we saw at the end of Marty's time here, in fact. Marty got to where he was throwing everything he could at the wall and bringing in every goddamn lunatic available if he thought he could win with him.

I think Reid would've been banging the table for Mixon in the 2nd had he fallen that far for that very reason. Reid's the guy that will do everything he can to keep that 'it isn't our time' mentality from seeping in because I think he recognizes that his time is winding down.

The only way the Chiefs get better (or more dangerous in the playoffs) under Smith is if he is willing to consistently challenge the secondaries down the field. Defenses don't respect that aspect of our offense right now (and never have under Alex), and it causes the run game, pass game, the whole damn offense to suffer. Now he has a kid behind him who would immediately flip that narrative on its head. Whenever Mahomes is ready, defenses are facing a QB who can make any throw from any spot.

So, the way I see it, Alex would be an absolute fool to not let it fly this year. Now that the replacement is under development, he knows the clock has nearly struck midnight on his tenure in KC.

The same limitations have been discussed every year he has been here. We've never seen him consistently overcome his cowardly lion tendencies with the football. Not going to hope for anything different now.

If this team has major success and makes a run to the SB with Smith under center, it's going to be because Houston was healthy and keyed an awesome defense and Hunt/the running game took a major step forward.

Alex will be what he is. He'll protect the ball. He will pussy out and limit the offense.

Yeah, I thought I saw genuine growth in 2015. Then the way he battled back in the opener against the Chargers last year made me think we were really going to see the full portfolio and see that aggressive Smith that Urban Meyer insisted was in there once he fully absorbed an offense.

Nope - he's just too damn risk averse. He is who he is. And entering the playoffs I thought that might be enough.

Then our section stared on in horror as Tyreek Hill lined up against a LBer who blew coverage while Alex Smith rolled the other way in the face of phantom pressure.

He's not good enough. But hopefully next year will allow the young guys on this squad to take another step forward. 2018 will be the year Mahomes needs to get used to the speed and 2019 and 2020 will be the year that we still have some juice from Kelce/Houston/Berry while Hill, Jones, Hunt, Peters, etc... have ascended into their primes.

There will still be competitive teams in that interim period. Maybe even teams that can get lucky and do real damage. But the 'next window' is here in 3 years and winning on our way there can only help that.
