Big Green Egg

Been looking at these and may buy one this spring. I figure some of you grillmasters own one. Are they worth the $$$? What size do you recommend? I'm looking at the Large or XL. Anything you don't like about it? Do you have it in the nest, table, or some custom built island/kitchen thing?

How do they work as grills? Smokers?

Discuss. Any pics are welcome.

My biggest issue over the years with them has been the wind knocking off the lid while sitting around resulting in the lid not having a tight seal. I have had one or two rust out over the years as well, but for $100 it's a decent grill. I always have one on hand for quick steaks and burgers. If I really want to do some serious smoking, I stick with a low and slow on the Yoder.

That's a nice setup as well. I know I had a hell of a time when mine showed up humping it over the steps to get it in my back yard. I ended up using some wood for a ramp to avoid losing a nut over of the deal.

Can't recommend one. Don't know much about the gas smokers.

Oh, I thought you were asking about my current grill. I definitely want a charcoal smoker.

Yoder uses some very heavy gauge steel so the heat is very constant once your desired heat is reached. I have even had good luck using it when ambient temperature has been around zero.

The Big Green Egg has no competition. It's a 160 lb cast iron oven. Nothing else on the market can maintain heat like the egg. It's the equivalent of your best skillet vs teflon. One you have to crank the heat on until you're done cooking and it cools down almost instantly.

The egg, like a good skillet, maintains heat with minimal fuel. It gets up to 700 degrees and you can cook pizza on it.
