Mock (12/1)

Assumptions:

1. Chiefs finish 12-4, winning a first round bye. The Raiders come to town and the Chiefs finish them off. The Chiefs host the AFCCG against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Chiefs pummel the living shit out of Ben Roethlisberger, but Big Ben shows why he's a Hall of Famer by outpacing the Chiefs, 35-32. The Chiefs have the 28th pick in the draft. Alex Smith, Andy Reid, and John Dorsey are all retained.

2. OLB Tamba Hali retires.

3. RB Jamaal Charles renegotiates a contract down to 2 years, $4m; P Dustin Colquitt renegotiates his contract down to 2 years, $5m.

4. NT Dontari Poe is franchised.

5. DE Allen Bailey is traded for a 3rd rounder in 2018. It does not net any picks in 2017.

6. S Eric Berry is re-signed for 4 years, $44m ($19m guaranteed).

7. The following players are brought back on minimum deals: DE Kendall Reyes

8. The Chiefs tender the following players: FB Trey Millard, WR Albert Wilson, S Daniel Sorensen, K Cairo Santos, LS James Winchester.

9. The following players walk in free agency: QB Nick Foles, RB Knile Davis, OG Mike Person, DE Jarvis Jenkins

10. The following players are cut: FB Anthony Sherman, TE Ross Travis, OLB Frank Zombo, ILB Terrance Smith, CB Kenneth Acker

12. The Chiefs sign CB Prince Amukamara (Jaguars) for 3 years, $20m ($8m guaranteed).

11. The Chiefs bring in 4 compensatory picks: a 4th (Sean Smith), a 5th (Chase Daniel), and two 6ths (Donald Stephenson & Tyvon Branch).

On with the show:

1.28. NT Vita Vea, Washington

With the signing of Amukamara in my fake offseason, the Chiefs enter the 2017 NFL Draft with all of their starters known. They also are in a perfect spot to find their Quarterback of the Future, but no QB really stands out as worth trading up for in 2017. They think there is some value there, so they wait another round.

John Dorsey's track record is to get somebody that could replace a potentially departing veteran in a year or so. Under this hypothetical, the biggest roster opening the Chiefs could have would be at nose tackle, as both Dontari Poe and Jaye Howard could leave in free agency, leaving the Chiefs with no natural nose tackles.

Enter: Vea, who is set this year to move up in the Draft. Vea is a massive 340 pounder who comes from the same school as Alameda Ta'amu. Ta'amu didn't end up working out, but Dorsey clearly liked him enough to sign him and kick his tires this past offseason, and here he's going to opt for a better version of Ta'amu in Vea.

2.50. QB Brad Kaaya, Miami

The Chiefs package their 60th pick in the 2nd and their 127th pick in the 4th to move up 10 spots.

The Chiefs have found their guy. A cerebral player who is a mentally tough, quick passing rhythm, multiple-reads quarterback who was groomed this past year by the same coach that groomed Aaron Murray, who Dorsey selected. Kaaya looks a lot like Alex Smith, though is nowhere near as athletic.

He plays in a spread, however, and will need at least one year to groom. No problem, for a Chiefs team that is as patient in its personnel decisions as it is on the field.

3.91. OLB Dawuane Smoot, Illinois

This guy has soured on everybody's draft charts. At one point he was a 1st round talent. Now seems to be coming in around the 3rd round for a couple sites.

But make no mistake; this is the kind of player Dorsey loves. Smoot was a collegiate hurdler and should be able to show impressive burst and corner-bending as a passrusher.

4.133 (compensatory). TE Tyrone Swoopes, Texas

There are pretty loud whispers that Swoopes isn't NFL material at QB, but a lot of teams are reportedly interested in him at TE. I really like the idea; his size is really good and he should have outstanding hands for the position. The Chiefs need to beef up their TE corps some, as Smith clearly likes to use safer receiving targets.

5.166. RB Corey Clement, Wisconsin

Clement is a true bellcow that the Chiefs desperately need to add to their roster. If Ware were to go down, the Chiefs would have to rely on Charcandrick West, who simply doesn't look like an every-down back. I'd like a healthy return of Jamaal Charles as much as anybody, and while I have Charles staying in KC, he's probably just a complimentary guy going forward.

5.173 (compensatory). CB Damontae Kazee, San Diego State

A smaller nickel CB who is physical and really great fighter in press coverage. The only nickel the Chiefs have on the roster is Steven Nelson, who I really, really like at the position. Kazee will have a tough time making the roster, but you can never have too many CBs.

6.204 (compensatory). WR Taywan Taylor, Western Kentucky

Taylor boasts great hands and good speed for his position. He has all the measurables, and Dorsey really likes measurables on his prospects.

6.210 (compensatory). QB Brady Gustafson, Montana

Talk about measurables... This 6'6" quarterback is a project's project. But he should be an interesting developmental guy on the practice squad for a couple years. He has the ideal NFL frame, however.

7.250. S Weston Steelhammer, Air Force

The Chiefs don't really need a safety, but they've got all these draft picks, so, whatever. I love the name Steelhammer for a safety, and that's really all the thought I've put into this selection.

Less athletic Alex Smith isn't likely to get anyone excited

Just curios. Why did you choose Millard over Sherman? Sherman has been a very good fullback for us and is still playing at a high level. Millard already had a chance to beat him out and failed. Why would next year be any different?

I think Vea gets stood up and rerouted far too easily. He tries to play with too much finesse IMO. (If that's possible for a 6'4", 340 lb dude to even do.)

Utah's offensive line (which is the best offensive line the Huskies defense will see this year) kinda worked him over and Utes RB Joe Williams piled up 172 yards.

Lowell Lotulelei is the better nose tackle prospect IMO.

Vea's size is intriguing, but I view him as a real project at the next level.

That was always the critique of Ta'amu, too, that he always played with too much finesse.

I don't think you'd need to move up for Kaaya. He's 3rd round territory, so late 2nd would work just fine.
