Christopher Nolan's next: 'Interstellar'

Script was written by his brother, and Spielberg was previously attached.

The script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech.

The script for Interstellar was written by Jonathan Nolan, Chris' brother, who worked on The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight, as well as Prestige. Jonathan Nolan (known as Jonah) also has a "story by" credit for Memento, Chris Nolan’s breakout movie.

Steven Spielberg was previously attached to direct Interstellar and produce with Lynda Obst. It is unclear if Spielberg will remain involved, especially considering the director's planned next movie, Robopocalypse, was delayed indefinitely on Wednesday.

Sweet. You're one of the people around here I wait to hear from for reviews on sci-fi flicks. Definitely looking forward to seeing this one. Maybe a matinee tomorrow...

The issue isn't with Nolan or the mix or the movie theater sound system. The problem is that many theaters weren't acoustically designed and have issue with bass buildup. Even some of the better Mann's theaters aren't treated properly.

Bass traps are essential when viewing a movie in which the audience expects explosions, loud noise, heavy bass, and so on. Without them, the bass waves, which can be three feet long, will bounce all over the room and cancel out other frequencies.

This is a movie theater problem, not a problem with Nolan's mixes.

Nearly forgot, one other thing which annoyed me was Anne Hathaway's big speech. You'll know it when you hear it. Almost pulled me out of the movie. But not quite. Its connection to the resolution was a little disjointed as well, but I was fine with it.

I've been leafing through some threads online the last hour or so and most of the complaints I've seen strike me as people who aren't quite as smart as they think they are looking really hard for things to complain about, but that's what I get for surfing film snob webshites. There's also a lot of Nolan hate in general, which doesn't come as a surprise.

There are some very big ideas in the movie. On the surface it seems like Nolan/screenwriters wrapped up things nicely with a bow, but I left feeling the wormhole events were left to interpretation. Cooper made some assumptions that may or may not be correct about what was going on, and who or what was responsible. But maybe I've been reading too many books with unreliable narrators lately, it's all cut and dried and obvious and I'm falling into my own trap of thinking I'm smarter than I really am.

IMO, it was a very average bordering on being awful. The separation from reality in this movie was too great to redeem itself.

Interesting. It might be an issue with some of the IMAX theaters?

I remember watching Inception in IMAX and the dialogue being muddled.

Then of course the famous Bane dialogue being muted and hard to understand at times. At least in the original trailer.

I saw it at 8 last night at TownCenter 20 in Leawood. Acoustic issues for sure, but nothing that ruined the movie. I have to agree with Dane on this as well. It was definitely the local sound system and not the film itself.

As far as the film went, I think I liked it, but I do not know if it was actually a good film. I absolutely love scifi; the headier the better. This wasn't so heady, but quite abstract, which I did adore. It also has some very emotional moments, which are also pitfalls for me, and sucker me into loving films that aren't great.

Currently I am thinking of this film as a lollipop.

Spoiler!

Any theaters in LA you'd suggest seeing it at?

I think Arclight Hollywood is the best cinema experience around. I don't care for the Dome, however. I'm always disappointed at the Chinese Theater (and Mann's 6 in Hollywood & Highland are garbage, IMO).

The big rooms at The Grove are good, as are the big rooms at the Americana but I don't care for the sound or picture in the smaller rooms.

But once again, nothing touches Arclight Hollywood, IMO.

Much like broadcast TV stations and even radio stations, there is no standardized format for sound in a movie theater, so it's highly likely that there are issues. Unless you're seeing a film in a newish theater designed for an excellent experience (Pacific Theater's Arclight, Alamo Draft House, etc.), it'll probably vary from theater to theater.

I remember reading the complaints. I didn't see it in the movie theater but I've never had any issues at home.

Again, I didn't see it in the theater but I haven't had any issues at home. That said, I thought it was an odd choice.
