IYO, Who was/is the best piano player you have heard?

Anthony Burger - Hands down!

Talent wise, there was nothing this guy couldn't play, in any style. Had severe burns on his hands as a toddler to grow up with the talent he had was truly remarkable.

So sad, he passed away too quick, here is a video for some of the younger crowd.

Can't say that I have ever just listed to a Pianist playing solo very much. Not my kind of music style.

On a side note, I always wished I could walk into a room full of people with a piano sitting in the corner, sit down and start playing so everyone would gather around.

Well, To each His/Her own Opinion?

Depending on the style of music that floats your boat is where many of you want to lay your claim.

Just a little about Burger.... Anthony Burger was born in Cleveland, Tennessee to Richard and Jean Burger. At age eight months, he was using a baby walker and fell into a heating duct on the floor of his house. He suffered third degree burns on his hands, face and, legs. After suffering the burns, Burger's doctor told his parents he was very likely to not be able to move his hands in the future. Despite the odds, Burger recovered. At the age of five, he was accepted at the Cadek Conservatory, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. A child prodigy, Burger was playing classical piano repertoire within a few years. Burger graduated from Bradley Central High School in Cleveland.

After watching these 2 video's, if you can tell me your cat ( pianist ) can do this, I've got nothing to say to ya.

Just look at what Keith Jarrett accomplished when he "switched" to jazz midway through his career having zero experience with the genre previously. It's all about habits and intent.

And Jerry Lee Lewis? You're going to tell me a classically trained pianist couldn't replicate what Lewis did on the piano down to the tiniest style detail? Please.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" refers to preferences. What I'm talking about is greatness of expression.

And no, it's not just about classical vs. pop, either. Ben Folds could easily have been a classical recording artist. He's not as good as Hamelin or Wang, but he's undeniably great.

But can they write a song or arrangement someone wants to listen to. That to me takes more musical genius than technical ability IMO.

I could but it would have the opposite effect. People would be running for the door like someone yelled allahu Akbar.

We're talking pianists or songwriters here? The topic is piano players. How good is someone at playing piano? That's what we're asking.

But since you asked, yes. You don't learn to play the shit they do without learning how music works.

Yes I understand and I went off the rails, but I am willing to bet 90% of this board doesn't listen to classical music and topic was best piano player you have heard.
You chose to run us all down because its not what you like. That isnt a love of music thats a music snob.
I can listen to someone beat on various sized garbage pails if its done well. Hell I was mesmerized by a guy on PBS playing a table full of different wine glasses.

This is utterly ridiculous.

Just because you "don't listen" to Classical pianists doesn't mean they don't blow the ****ing doors off of guys like Billy Preston.

Good ****ing god, people.

The question was "Who was/is the best piano player you have heard?"

I said based on some of the responses I've seen, that people are just picking music they like, not necessarily the best pianists they've heard.

And that's simply the truth. I was also VERY polite about it. Way more polite than the average football disagreement between posters on this forum.
