Serial Podcast

I searched for a thread or post about this podcast, but didn't see anything.

Anyone else been following and listening to the episodes? I'm completely hooked. It's so compelling and just absolutely intriguing.

Here's a brief summary from the podcast's site:

On January 13, 1999, a girl named Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, disappeared. A month later, her body turned up in a city park. She'd been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae's body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others don’t.

Sarah Koenig, who hosts Serial, first learned about this case more than a year ago. In the months since, she's been sorting through box after box (after box) of legal documents and investigators' notes, listening to trial testimony and police interrogations, and talking to everyone she can find who remembers what happened between Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee fifteen years ago. What she realized is that the trial covered up a far more complicated story, which neither the jury nor the public got to hear. The high school scene, the shifting statements to police, the prejudices, the sketchy alibis, the scant forensic evidence - all of it leads back to the most basic questions: How can you know a person’s character? How can you tell what they’re capable of? In Season One of Serial, she looks for answers.

Convenient that he's agreed to talk now that season 1 is over and he can have control over the environment and direction of the "interview". With emphasis on the quotes.

Evidently his post has since been removed. Shocker.
Yeah, I would love for him to be interviewed by Sarah, but it'll be a cupcake interview if he does one. He's guilty in my head - just of what is the problem.

I won't say he's guilty just because he was convicted, because that same argument would apply to Adnan, but Jay knew something that he could not possibly have known (namely the location of Hae's car) unless he was either involved or fed details by the police or prosecution. There's just no way around that.

Well, I guess he's confirmed his compulsive liar status with a, what is this now, third timeline of events? Is he trying to get Adnan freed at this point? He's admitting perjury...

This is probably the version he's been telling himself and anyone who'll listen for long enough that he actually believes it.

Yeah, I think he just threw a HUGE lob for the posterizing dunk for Adnan's defense team in regards to perjury.

So it appears that Jay, Urick and "others" didn't want to chat with Sarah for Serial are going to be doing interviews with Natasha (girl who did the Jay piece).

Also, Jay's lawyer from the trial, told him to interview. WOW....I'm just so ****ing baffled by this.

Almost seems like damage control after the podcast went big. Which may blow back spectacularly. I don't see how this can do anything good for any of them.

Statute of limitations has run on drug trafficking charges and he took a plea already for the accessory charge. I guess the lawyer really doesn't think Jay will incriminate himself.

Still...never talk to the press.

Someone on reddit made a great point about how he's trying to turn this into some kind of attack by SK and reddit on his family. So he invites an interviewer into his house - with his kids there - to talk about all this.

Just disgusting manipulation on his part, with all of this. And it's just like his original interviews with the police. He's talking completely out of self-interest.

He seems almost ludicrously obsessed with public perception. It's actually making me wonder if he isn't more intimately involved in the murder itself, something I didn't really consider seriously before he started talking. He's trying so hard to make himself the victim.

Yeah but now Adnan's lawyers are going to be looking for prejury charges.

I just binged this from Saturday until today.

Wow. It's . . . crazy.

My theory from the first couple of episodes was "There's GOT to be someone else. Someone else has to be involved, and that person is someone about whom neither Jay nor Adnan want to involve." I don't think Adnan did it, nor do I think he KNOWS who did it. I think he just has some general idea of who did, but is too scared to say. But he knows Jay didn't do it, which is why he never says Jay did it. But why are there so many inconsistencies and mentions of "those people?"

And then I finish and go to reddit and see the theory that makes the most sense. The thing that ties all the slip-ups together. The theory goes that Adnan and Jay were doing some kind of drug dealing together. And this makes sense, because you hear the story about Adnan stealing a few bucks from the mosque. He wants some money. So, he gets tied up with Jay. Of COURSE they know each other more than either lets on. They're business partners. That's why the guy says it wasn't strange to see Jay pick up Adnan from track practice. It happened a lot.

I think something went south. Jay got them in over their heads, and then blamed it on Adnan. Jay's family is full of convicted drug dealers. They had connections. Jay knew who to talk to. But something got ****ed. That's why Adnan was with Jay on the morning of the 13th. It's why Adnan loaned Jay his car and phone. It wasn't to get Stephanie a present -- it was so Jay could fix whatever was wrong. Now, Adnan has no reason to suspect that this has anything to do with Hae's disappearance, which is why he doesn't connect the two that day.

So, Jay is out, making all these calls, doing a bunch of shit trying to fix what went down with the botched situation. Somehow, Adnan gets blamed, but they still want something from Adnan, so they take out the girl. This is the biggest problem with this scenario. Why Hae? What is she to them? There's either something connecting them that no one knows or this theory pretty much falls apart here.

So, all this goes down, but Adnan is at the library (hence Asia's letter). Jay is still ****ing around with Jen, freaking out about this body in the trunk. Maybe Jay didn't do it, but he was certainly there with the body in the trunk at some point. He picks up Adnan, they get high and go back to Jenn's house to create an alibi. Adnan isn't aware that Hae is dead, but merely missing. But because he's high, and this drug shit is going down, he's freaked out that the police are going to call. He's freaking out because he doesn't want them to find out about the drugs. It has nothing to do with Hae.

Adnan and Jay separate, and Adnan goes to the mosque to give his dad dinner, and Jay goes to work. Jay is freaking out, telling his friend that he's scared of "people connected to the murder." According to one of his stories, he's afraid of Adnan and the muslim mafia or something. No way. He's afraid of the guys that killed Hae and threatened to kill Stephanie. That's who he's afraid of. He just substitutes Adnan's name in there most of the time. If he's so afraid of Adnan, why does he keep hanging out with him after they "bury the body?" That makes no sense.

And it also makes no sense that if Hae felt threatened by Adnan, why would she get his new number and write it down? Why would she invite him to meet her new boyfriend to check out her car? No, she isn't feeling threatened by him.

Over the new few weeks, the situation isn't cleared up, and Asia's letters get redacted because of threats to her. Mr. S "finds" the body. More likely, he was bribed or coerced in some way to reveal it. He did time with Jay's dad. There are connections here. That's how he so easily found the body and why his story makes no sense.

Jenn is completely involved, and I'm sure Cathy is, too. I just don't know how exactly Cathy is involved, but from what I'm reading, Cathy's boyfriend, Jeff, is a super shady character. Jay had already told Jeff about Hae earlier in the day before picking up Adnan. So, there's a reason they all went back there. Cathy testified that it wasn't unusual for Jay to come over without Jenn, so it seems strange that she takes that tack on the Serial podcast. More lies, but why? She, or someone she knows, is involved.

Adnan figures out what is going on eventually. I don't know when. Maybe at the trial, which is why he tells Jay he's a coward. But that's why Adnan is so sure of his own innocence and why his story is so vague. Adnan knows he didn't do it. He knows Jay didn't do it. But he doesn't know exactly who did. All he knows is that Jay DOES know, but won't say.

And that's why Jay's story constantly changes. He constantly changes it to protect whoever actually killed her. I always thought Jay was a shady ****. There's no reason to keep changing your story. Once . . . okay. Twice . . . getting very unlikely. Three times, I'm done. He's lying on purpose. He's also tried to paint himself as some kind of small time guy, but also some big time guy. He didn't go to the police because of his record, but the police tell him "You don't have a record." He's also the only one with a history of violence. Trying to stab his friend so his friend would know what it felt like? WTF? There are zero stories of Adnan like this. Doing something stupid like stealing money? Fine, we've all done similarly stupid shit. But there's no history of violence or culture of violence surrounding Adnan. There is with Jay.

So, those are my initial thoughts.

I agree for the most part with this.

My only possible twist I've thought about too is that perhaps, Hae wasn't collateral for something that went south, but perhaps she stumbled on Adnan and Jay purchasing the weed to distribute (or something to that extent) and they took her out.

Why wouldn't Adnan just come out and say "Jay and I were interested in buying weed to possibly profit of it. It's the real reason why he had my car."

I agree with Jenn being involved somehow. I believe that Jenn and Jay are the people that are involved with the trunk pop - Jay replaces Jenn with Adnan and the roles with himself for the police. That is if Adnan is truly innocent.

There's something missing to this case / story - not just the real murderer, but the piece of the puzzle that will bring everything clearly into view for everyone to say, "ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, now it makes sense."
