Legendary NHRA drag racer Tom 'The Mongoose' McEwen dies at 81

He was an icon back in the day and the rivalry with Don "the Snake" Prudhomme was special.

Yeah! I had that silver mustang. You had to mail order it, and they were hard to get.

Unless it was the other way around. One of those guys was definitely my guy and the other absolutely wasn’t. I don’t know. Either way. At any rate, I’m pretty sure it was one of them, if these are the right two guys.

Another thing this brings back is I remember my friends and I would write letters to oil companies,car part makers etc and they would send you stickers in the mail. STP stickers were huge oval stickers. Mopar had cool stickers too.

Those STP stickers were the rage at school in the day. I had the big 6 inch on my notebook for school and the one and 2 inch on bike and lunch pail. Andy Granatelli and "The Racers Edge."

Yep - that's the one I had. I haven't seen it in a while - it might have gone to the great backyard burial - after my Mom's been letting my little cousins play with my cars for years.

yep, l still have a square hot wheels case with all my very roughly used cars in them. Found them in the attic when cleaning out Moms place. One of the few things my son asked me to keep. 48 cars . Too bad l played them

Wow, I know for a fact I had the gold car in the first row third one down. It was one of my favorites to play with in the back yard. I would make a cool track with tunnels, popsicle sticks as bridges and help support the tunnels out of dirt.

A few of the others look familiar too!

What memories!!!

Here's a picture of the fan club kit that the silver Boss Mustang came in. It was ONE Dollar! It did take forever to get one from Mattel though. Seemed like almost a year.
