To all the "THIS OL SUCKS WAAAH" folks:

I have a question that not one of you has answered for me except for Saccopoo, and he doesn't share your opinion on how the OL will perform this year.

What the hell was Dorsey supposed to do?

No, don't ****ing say, "They should have drafted OL like the Cowboys do!" That takes years.

Imagine you're Dorsey. The 2014 season has ended. You view the OL as crucially important like you do.

What moves are you going to make that will RESPONSIBLY improve the offensive line to your satisfaction?

So yeah, Collins was probably not terribly reasonable. Beyond that, TJ Clemmings instead of Steve Nelson would have been a damn nice project pick at T, though I doubt he's ready to contribute right away.

Call it a defensible strategy if you want, but it's hard to argue that Dorsey and co. didn't really half-ass the T position in the offseason. They used essentially zero FA or Draft capital on the position. With Stephenson and Allen, perhaps they were comfortable with what they had, but that's a decision they actively made - not one they were handcuffed into. If the T position turns into a festering shithole, that's a miss on their part and they should be held accountable for it.

As for the bitching about G and C...well that bitching is just dumb. We're fine at G and C.
I don't ever bitch about a regime trusting their development of their own players. If they miss, it's on them, but if they can't trust themselves to develop guys, what's the point?

The guy's you have in your locker room and on the practice squad are your best chances to evaluate and correctly assess.

The draft would have been a place to look for a tackle surr, because of the cost though

But hey, it's fellas like you and Clay that are giving Smith the excuses right now. According to you fellas, the line and the WR group still sucks balls. In that event, I guess Smith gets a pass for this season, right?

Smith is out of reasons to fail. His line is good enough. His weapons are good enough. If he can't succeed with this cast around him, then he cannot succeed or at the very least he cannot get us over the hump.

That's fine with me. The key to fixing a problem is isolating variables. I think Dorsey and Reid have done a damn nice job of isolating the variables here.

Agree 100%

I even would have done a competition with Kush and some veteran instead of using a 2nd round pick on Morse, then used that 2nd round pick on a tackle, which I said all offseason was pretty important.

We had the dudes on the roster such that ONE of them would have done the RG job okay in Allen, Fulton, LDT, and Fanaika (though at the time he was more of a "Hey, who the hell knows?" option... wasn't somebody I really knew anything about).

That would have been far preferable to juggling Fisher, Allen, and Stephenson all year should one of them get injured.

Draft La'el Collins. It was absolutely worth the gamble. His name gets cleared, and you hit a home run. He gets indicted, and oh noes you lost yourself a seventh round pick.

Oh I'm sure Knowmo would be so much happier not watching Peters pick Manning off at the home opener.

Also, Oher, Free, and Bulaga WEREN'T available. Their teams re-signed them before they hit the market, you ****ing reerun.

Would you advocate Smellway pay the Raiders' price for Hudson?

Also, you guys need offensive linemen just as badly as we do. Why didn't you just re-sign Orlando Franklin or bring aboard Mike Iupati?

If they really wanted him, they'd have had to use a 2nd, MAYBE a 3rd on him.

He wasn't going to sign with a team that drafted him with a 7th, IMO. Maybe I'm wrong, but it just seems unlikely.

Expecting Hunt to just sign off on using a 2nd day pick on the guy given the notable murder/suicide that wrapped up in our parking lot is probably being a little unreasonable.

Like I said - I'd have loved to have done it, but I think it's fair to give Dorsey a pass there.

He and his agent made that difficult by threatening to not sign a contract if a team drafted him beyond the 3rd round. Said he'd enter the next year's draft instead of signing the contract.

Doubled the risk of drafting him.

Oher was definitely available as he was cut by the Titans in February. Bulaga and Free were signed right before FA opened, other teams were allowed to talk to those guys during the "negotiation period". They wound up staying with their teams, but they could've been gotten if the right offer came along...

And Denver's OL situation was fine up until the Clady injury. They brought in Gradkowsi and Shelley Smith as FA's and then went and drafted Ty Sambrailo to play RT and Max Garcia to compete at G/C.

That's not an opinion. That's fact. He would not of signed as a 7th rounder.

It was Elway's plan all along to sign Evan Mathis. He knew from pure talent and prudent forethought that Mathis would be cut by the Eagles. He's the GM of the millennium.

But he signed as an UFA? I don't really understand how that works... don't you make less signing as an UFA than you do a 7th round pick?
