it's unfortunate this guy is left to live. Sometimes we as a society need to cut a person loose. IMO this was one of those times.

Really? How about this report from the Associated Press:

Quote:
What gets little notice, however, is a series of academic studies over the last half-dozen years that claim to settle a once hotly debated argument _ whether the death penalty acts as a deterrent to murder. The analyses say yes. They count between three and 18 lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted killer.

The reports have horrified death penalty opponents and several scientists, who vigorously question the data and its implications.

Sad they didn't execute him. The most severe crimes deserve the most severe punishment.

Why?

What exactly do you hope to accomplish through applying the death penalty to this guy? Do you think that other nutjobs will be deterred from theater shootings?

A mass murderer needs to go IMO. Holmes through his actions has demonstrated that he doesn't deserve to be around the living. Even in prison.

I would hope to accomplish not paying for him to live for another 50 years. I realize with all of the appeals and other bullshit it may not end up saving any money. Which is why we should go back to using a rope and a stool. And if everyone agrees that he definitely did it, get on with it.

"We should apply the death penalty to this guy because he deserves to die" isn't saying much.

You're right. Capital punishment is extremely expensive. And (in Colorado, anyway) it doesn't appear to lead to any actual executions, so it's a waste.

"If everyone agrees that he definitely did it, get on with it" is never going to happen.

The question was, what (criminal justice) purpose do you hope to accomplish by applying the death penalty to this individual.

"He deserves to die" does not address that question.

It's not an easy call and I'm glad I don't have to make it but for **** sake the guy walked into a movie theater and started shooting people. Once you do that you give up any right to mercy.

I was once sitting with my niece at an outside ice cream shop eating ice cream and some homeless crazy dude walked up and pulled her ear and it was almost lights out (literally) for him. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be dealing with a murdered love one.

It can go either way as far as I'm concerned.
