The simulation assumes players are available unless they're on IR or on an injury report. If there are no statistics for a named player, it treats them like a free agent or in some cases as a little bit better than a free agent.

Street Free Agent had a 33 yrd punt returned for a touchdown in game one.

That being said, punter schmunter... it's the situation.

1. He was listed as available and ready for every week this season on the site. I took the site at face value, trusted it, and made the decision based off it.

2. If it was another position, it would really, really suck.

3. This is a beta. I'm simply trying to help them put together a more complete game to avoid situations in the future.

4. FFFUUUUUUUuu!!

Edit: Here is a perfect example of why FA should be allowed during the season. Now I'm stuck the entire year without a punter for game day, yet a wasted spot on my roster (and a wasted 3-yr contract)
No you didn't. The availability doesn't surface until after you sign a player and it didn't pop up until just the last week or two anyway.

You put the guy on your roster (or chose to extend him) without bothering to even check to see if he's played the last 2 years. That's entirely on you.

There was no way for you to 'trust his site' before you signed him. You simply didn't do your homework and now you're trying to blame CD for it.

To me, this is a perfect example of why FA shouldn't be allowed during the season. You ****ed up - live with it. When an NFL team doesn't prepare and ends up with holes in the roster, it gets to go get 'street free agents' - just like we do. The difference is that the NFL has more than 24 teams so there is a pool of legitimate NFL roster players available that aren't available to NFL teams. The present model rewards foresight and depth planning. Yours would encourage the 47 man roster crap that so many have wanted to do and top-heavy roster construction. To hell with that - plan accordingly; it's what real teams have to do.

Under Manage roster, He showed 1's for the entire season. Wtf are you talking about? The website showed him being available for the whole season. You're right, I didn't do further research on the punter... but it was a mistake of it showing one thing on a site, vs the reality of it. In real life that wouldn't happen... and in Reality if something happened where a guy ends up not being available for whatever reason, the team has the ability to go out and sign someone else.. Can't do that here.

You're happy someone else didn't do their homework on a player so you want them to suffer. You're trolling, not trying to get the league\game to a better place.

You had to sign him before he showed up on the 'manage roster' screen. You already committed to three years to this guy before you bothered to even check his availability for week 1. I have no earthly idea what compelled you to do so.

And you're right, I want to see players punished for not doing their homework. I want a realistic gameplay and in the NFL, you're going to pay for leaving a gaping hole in your lineup because you didn't bother to research it.

Again, we already have guys that are running a 47-48 man roster because they're not worried about their depth situations. That's wholly unrealistic. Hell, adding any kind of player from FA in-season and getting a halfway competent performance from that player is completely unrealistic as they generally have no idea what offense/defense or otherwise they're coming into.

NFL teams dance with who brought them and they are rewarded for doing their due dilligence before the season started.

That's what I want. But please, explain to me how it's a more realistic experience to allow teams in sandbox to choose from one of over 400 surplus NFL roster players that are available because we use 24 teams instead of 32.

The answer is simple - it's not. If an NFL team is forced to go to the street during the season, they get the equivalent of Sandbox's "street free agent". In real life, the player that NFL teams "have a chance to go sign" is essentially the real world equivalent of the Street Free Agent that sandbox is going to give you. You're not going to get to choose from 400 legitimate NFL caliber players that are sitting in the FA pool due to only having 24 teams.

This system is far more realistic than the one you're proposing and it encourages owners to be smart in their pre-season planning and preparation.

I should preface by saying I'm retired so I have nothing but time.

With my punter I got lazy & signed him to a 3 yr. contract right away. It wasn't until later when I was checking FA punt averages against what I had when I noticed he hadn't played since '11.

And sure, Robbie Gould is still playing but he misses the last 3-4 games of the season. So instead of chancing an in season FA, I cut him & signed Vinateri. Again Gould was signed to a 4 yr. contract.

I screwed up. All the time I spent researching other positions I totally spaced the P/K positions' having to eat 2 contracts.

Live & learn.

Wait. You signed a punter that played one and only one season in the NFL (in 2010 no less) to a 3 year deal for the 2012 season. You're trying to blame the site which shows Matt Dodge as perfectly available for all 16 games, which he is. He isn't hurt, he can play for your team. But he sucks, so the Giants cut him in 2011. That's nobody's fault but your own if your punter can't hack it in the NFL and you signed him anyway.

edit: there's even a link to the pro football reference page that shows that he wasn't on an nfl roster after 2011 that is provided to you, and you were still too lazy to click that to see his nfl status. Yet, you want to blame a row of 1's. Unreal.

He was already on the roster when i inherited it, he was on the Manage roster screen.. he showed available for the entire season, so I resigned him. It's not that hard to understand, DJ.

Players are signed during the season in reality due to injuries and other factors forcing others out\off the roster. Again, not hard to understand. You're talking out of both sides of the mouth again.

This makes much more sense to me as it's explained out, and if this is the intended reasoning behind the coding, then that's good. The problem is then - For a player in my situation who is brand spanking new to this. There is no repository for information. Nothing. I did not know that the season was starting until Monday when I read someone talking about the games starting then this past weekend. Hence, my surprise when FA ended. The ONLY information I have read is the few discussions I've seen on this thread and an email I got one time explaining Free Agency by Rain Man and was given the following tid-bits in the email

Quote:
Free Agency will begin before the 2012 season after the rookie draft.
Quote:
n the 2012 season, we will introduce all free agents at once to catch up. In the 2013 season and beyond, the free agency period will occur during the actual NFL season
This to me was confusing, I thought we were actually doing Free Agency to "catch up" to where we are currently and then was going to have the seasons start:

Quote:
a. Sandbox season goes from February through April.
b. Rookie draft in May. No 53-man limit.
c. Free agency from (likely) September through December, with free agents sprinkled in throughout that period.
d. January. Roster cuts to 53.
e. Late January. Final free agency period to flesh out rosters and sign players cut in Step d.
f. New Sandbox season begins.
I was lost, and have been lost since day one on everything. I've asked here and there on here what is going on and the have been given responses which has been nice, but there is no calendar or explanation of events that I've seen. This is just the league schedule, concerning rules I've been equally clueless (like Free Agency and trades being cut off etc). Someone here said it was announced, but I didn't see any further emails or anything on the site regarding this type of stuff.. so I was ignorant and obviously continue to be so.

I inherited him onto my team. He was already a part of the team. I re-signed him after seeing his availability through the whole season.. i wasn't concerned about the punter to do massive research. I DID click that link, and saw his stats were decent, I obviously missed the (2010 vs 2012) at the beginning of the string. Feel free to troll away.

It may seem simple to someone that has been in this league for a full season already and it's been explained to. However, to new players who are trying to grasp the whole concept it might not seem so - as we've never seen the mechanic or had it thoroughly explained out - other than Rain Man's initial post in the other thread. Which is also vague.
