That should get you there and then you can look for whatever you want. I filtered for D1 schools and searched for aggregate #'s since everything's divided differently between the two sports, football revenue roughly $2.9 billion, basketball, $1 billion. Adding in the tourney takes that number to $1.7 which is pretty doggone close to the split you just referenced.

No one's saying it isn't important. Well I'm not anyway. But it isn't on footballs level. A 60/40 split amounts to huge dollars at this level. To say that college basketball is as big as college football just isn't true, hence secondary. To say that it isn't big in it's own right would also not be true. Otherwise the schools like KU and Indiana and Duke, etc that don't give a crap about football wouldn't be able to afford to do so. Which we all know ain't the case.

Well said. I agree with your post here in its entirety. I don't intend to equte them 50-50, only to say they are much closer than re-alignment has led some folks (typically MU fans) to believe. That said you should post more on this thread since you make actual arguments supported by fact. It's almost weird reading it.

We are paying Haith $1.6 million a yr and that was a lifeline as the ship was going down in Miami (IE we were in the farthest thing from a bidding war to land his services). Also built a $75 million dollar (2002 dollars) arena 11 years ago. College hoops is the very definition of big business.

The basketball CCG was on network television and drew 20.9 million viewers. The football CCG was on cable and drew 26.4 million.

That's more than a 26% spread for a game on a channel that is only available in 86% of households.

Yeah. College football is more popular, and it's not close. The tournament is the greatest gimmick in sports, but it doesn't compare to football.

Super Bowl: 108m
NCAAF: 26m
NCAAB: 21m
NCAA baseball: 1m

You are quite correct when you say the Tourney doesn't compare to football - PRO football that is. Your cable vs network broadcast availability argument you just barfed up might be a low point.....even for you.

MU is normally among the top-20 most profitable basketball programs in the country. (They offered Painter 2M+) A new arena with no debt is a rarity in college sports. I suspect they'll be in the top-4 of the SEC pretty much annually in that sport. Depending on what Arky and Tennessee do, which are their hoops peers there.

That's pretty much every SEC school except Kentucky and Florida, although they are still not that popular considering all the success they've had. Alabama's basketball team might as well not even exist because noone in the state cares the least bit about basketball.

Nobody does and in a few years Ku fans wont either. You know your program is going downhill when beating Bruce Webber is considered an accomplishment.

Good thing Weis has that recruiting class coming in then. I'll be pissed when there's no more basketball to root for.

Plenty of people care. I'm one of them. It's just that very few care as much as they do about football.

That 7th best class in the Big 12 should really be something special. Congrats on 47th best in the nation. Even though it's worse than any team in the SEC, that's pretty good for Kansas.

Better hope they don't follow the B1G's lead and drop FCS schools.
