But then who's the starting OLB and where's the depth?

Their pass rush has been nonexistent for the most part since Ford's injury.

Dumping a potential 10 sack a year guy isn't the way to build a championship team.

wut

So Kareem Hunt goes 2+ months without a rushing TD and Spencer Ware's absence is meaningless?

During their losing streak, West was injured so they had to use CJ Spiller and Akeem Hunt, both of whom were ineffective.

It’s not, but are they planning on being a championship caliber team next year?

If they aren’t planning to keep him, it’s debatable on pulling the tag and going with a young guy or new draft pick or a free agent. Especially with fords injury history “.

I’d probably keep him and run out the year with him, they let him walk.

The offense certainly has enough weapons but the defense definitely needs more pass rushers and defensive lineman.

The Free Agent pool is extremely shallow for pass rushers in 2018, so I doubt there's any help there. It's possible they hit on a guy in the draft but without a 1st rounder, those odds decrease dramatically. Plus, as we've seen over the years, the defense, just like the offense, isn't automatically "Plug and Play".

You can never have too many pass rushers, so I wouldn't give up on Ford until his body says it's done.

If he returns to form next year but they're still concerned with his injury history, the Chiefs would likely garner a 3rd round Comp pick in 2019, which would definitely be helpful.

On a somewhat related note, Conner McGovern is playing really well in Denver.

For sure the offense looks good to go, but you’re also starting a first time qb who hasn’t taken a regular season snap at qb. I’m not gonna set the expectations that high.

The defense needs some additions for sure but it’s a little tough to gauge. When they’ve played with some attitude this year they’ve been better.

But it’s probably gonna be a transition year next year

If 2018 is a transition year, that means that 2019 or 2020 is when their "Window" would open, a mere 7-8 years after Reid was hired as the head coach.

What an epic disaster.

Dane is right. Unless Ford’s back is ****ed, you have to keep him. We need as many known pass rushers as possible and Ford’s salary isn’t hurting our cap after the dump of the older vets.

We need to draft another DE as similar to Chris Jones physically as possible to go with Chris Jones and Allen Bailey up front.

Build a strong pass rush unit and rotate them.

Is it possible to see how Kpass looks in camp, and if he is killing it then release Ford?

I'm way down on Ford, but if releasing him leaves behind a big financial problem and Kpass is still looking iffy... then yeah, it would probably be a mistake to part ways with Dee

They're just finishing up a window. 15,16 were a window that for multiple reasons, didn't work out. Even this year, for whatever reasons, aren't working out.

Once they traded up for Mahomes, it was obvious they were preparing for the 2nd window.

With hindsight I think there are a few reasons to point out why it didn't work out.

Yes and the 2nd window has potential to be much, much longer if Mahomes pans out..

There's no reason, from a cap perspective, to release Ford if he's completely healthy.

There are few options in Free Agency, at nearly every position, and with Smith, DJ and Hali all likely to be elsewhere, the Chiefs will free up approximately $33 million from those three players alone.

Also, at this point, I see no reason to extend Morse or Peters. Let them play through their 4th year before spending big bucks on them.

Yep, with Morse injury issues and Peters "issues", unless you can get a huge money break on one of them, no reason to spend now.

Which brings up another issue with Dorsey: Stop trading back and just trade up. Bring in talent that's immediately ready to contribute instead of just adding guys to add guys.

Like I already mentioned, three players from the 2016 draft, a 3rd, 5th and 6th, have already been released.

Hopefully, Veach drafts guys that are ready or at least near-ready to contribute. Enough of the 1-2-3 years before they get even close to contributing.
