Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Watched The Crazies tonight.

I completely understand that I fall outside of Hollywood's target audience, but the one thing you can't do is call something The Crazies and come up short on the crazy. That's what happened here. I don't care about your pregnant wife and how much she means to you, show me the crazy, you called it The Crazies. Show it to me then.

We're masters at labeling shit, but short on delivering on it.

Watched an awesome movie last night.

"North Face". German made movie with English subtitles, but it was awesome. Based on a true story.

Highly recommended.

If you get the Netflix RSS watch instantly feed you're already ahead of the curve but for those who many not know -- "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" now available.

Because Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Fincher) doesn't have it's own thread (at least, I couldn't find one), I thought I'd post this update here:

Stellan Skarsgård in Talks for Dragon Tattoo
Source: Variety August 5, 2010

We love Stellan Skarsgård. He's one of the few actors who has no problem talking about him being cast in a film before it's officially announced. Back in October of '09, he revealed he was part of the Thor cast, a long time before it was official, and now he's given similar quotes to Variety about David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

"I have met Fincher, I want to work with him, he wants to work me. I have had a concrete offer and now we are in negotiations," Skarsgård said.

He would play Martin Vanger, one of the principal suspects in the 40-year-old disappearance of a teenage girl.

"The contract is for the period September to March, but I don't know yet when I am supposed to start my part of the film," he added. "Most of it is to be shot in Stockholm, but some studio work will be done in the U.S. I think there might be some location work there as well, when it becomes too dark to shoot here."

It was recently made official that Daniel Craig will play journalist Mikael Blomkvist, though who will play hacker Lisbeth Salander is not yet known.

Anybody have directv and successfully watch an iFC "in theaters & on demand" movie?

I can see the regular ones that are on the ifc channel that month, but I read on their website about the ones that are on demand the same days they are in theaters if you aren't in a market it's playing, and I don't see those available.

I wanted to see Valhalla Rising when it came out two weeks ago here in LA but couldn't make the first weekend. Went to the theater the following weekend and it was already gone. Never saw a movie only out for one week before, but the ticket seller told me about the ifc on demand thing and said Valhalla Rising was on the on demand list.

Can I not see it just because it actually played in LA even though it has left theaters here? It is only playing in Boston and New York now.

But man did Colin Firth act the Hell out of his character. He was tremendous (and, yes, Jeff Bridges was on-par and probably better).
I couldn't even finish the movie, which is pretty rare. Colin Firth gave a great performance, sure, but I was thoroughly ambivalent about the character.

With all due respect, you're high if you ranked it above An Education.

**** An Education. Carrie Mulligan's performance is mitigated by the hatred of Jews all over the movie. Hateful film.
