Somebody's gotta have the inside scoop on Google Fiber launching tomorrow..??

https://fiber.google.com/savethedate/

Live broadcast over YouTube tomorrow. Anybody have any early news on this? Will it be available all over the Metro? How long will the waiting list be?

Anybody know anything? I'm impatient.

They have been one who sucks the peniss for generations. When I was a kid you couldn't even own a phone, it was illegal. ATT just rented them to you. I have some good stories of SW Bell and my ISP. Absolute bullshit.

I just booked my install appointment for next Thursday...

So does anyone have a suggestion for a good wireless-N router?

I helped a neighbor setup a Netgear WNDR4000, and it seemed OK. $89.... I'm not there yet, but I do wireless repeating inside the house, so that's why I had him buy two. So far he loves it. And when I go to it, since I use three APs in my house, it's more than cheap enough to buy and not cry.. And when Google Fiber gets here, it's going to be a must since I have only two computers "wired", and none of them wired to the base unit.. Hell, that's why I do wireless repeating!

It's a 750, so it's not like you won't find a box at the store with 900 on it, but, for me, the Wireless Repeating function isn't just a want, it's a need. I like 5 bars, and my house wasn't Cat-5 wired, so it's a good solution and more stable than I had ever hoped for cheap gear.

Posted this in the other thread:

Know that your Google Fiber Network box that will be installed with your service has dual-band MIMO n wireless capabilities. Speed-wise its a ****ing beast that outperforms most routers. Plus 4 Gigabit LAN ports.

There's no reason to buy an additional router, unless you need advanced router-specific functions like domain blacklisting. It does all the basic stuff like IP reservation, port forwarding, etc.

Does it do wireless repeating? Of any sort, with any vendor's gear?

Wireless repeating isn't a feature of the router itself. You could use a wireless repeater in conjunction with the network box though, if that's what you mean.

I'd caution against using a wireless repeater though, unless you absolutely must and can't get any connection otherwise. It causes dramatic drops in throughput just because of the required back and forth communication. Not to mention interference issues.

If you get the Google TV service, you should need any repeaters anyway, as the Google TV boxes serve as wireless access points as well, greatly increasing wireless coverage.

The last part is good news... Perhaps that's the answer... But to date I have a router near my office that connects to the base unit (other end of the house because the wireless routers connect-up very well, perhaps because I can place them nearly LOS, and that's important for Teleworking. I also have one in another room for both a non-wireless printer (that I don't want to attache to the local PC),a nd the PC too.

It's been really awesome so far (meaning NOT the bottleneck), but could later. But if the cable boxes become that, that's all the better.

Any links to how they want folks to setup their homes?

I have currently have cable modem and main router in Den. I take one RJ port from main router and run it to another router in the family room.

The router in the family room always has it's wireless turned on. The main router has a hardwired button to easily turn wireless on/off on the main router because a wireless signal is rarely needed on that side of the house.

works well because i turn on/off a wireless signal where ever and still have a strong signal throughout house. Don't have to worry about wireless repeater etc since the Daisy chain style makes it no hassle.

GF gives you 1Gbps (1024Mbps). The service you listed is 119 millibits per second.. which is pretty damn slow. Sorry, I'm a geek. Mbps = megs, mbps= millibits.

What type of WiFi devices to you have (A/B/G/N), and what kind of speed do you get from them?

I'd hate to have a Gig up/down, but have my built-in wireless NIC limit me to 54Mbps. But hey, if I could get 54Mbps, I'd only shed a small tear about the BW I'm leaving unused.

The laptop I'm n now has a Centrino Advanced-N 6200 wireless adapter, but I've never seen 300Mbps moving things around the house (when all devices are N-connected to the same router), and that sucks. So I think potential doesn't always mean it's going to happen. But with 20Mbps down and 1.5 up, I hardly cared...
