Al mentioned a possible window from the rain, then pessimism this morning. But if you look at the National Weather Service's forecast for today, this is what is says:
"Rain likely, mainly between 2pm and 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 64. East wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible." And then for tonight: "Rain, mainly after 11pm. Low around 50. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible." Two thoughts on this...it does look like there's at least a possibility of a window between 5-11 PM...and even then, the rain amounts for today are forecast to be light. Looks like the heaviest rain is happening overnight tonight and through the morning tomorrow. Still hope? |

I have looked at stats in 2014.
They are similar rotations but the Royals have a slight edge across the board. The Grantland piece does a nice job of breaking this down. Shields is a little better than Tillman. Ventura is a little better than Chen. Norris and Vargas have very similar regular numbers (assuming Vargas is the Game 3 starter and not Danny Duffy, in which case Duffy is much better), but Vargas actually has a better FIP. And Miguel Gonzalez out-performed his FIP by over a run and a half this year. That's pretty crazily, flukily unsustainable. He might have a lower ERA than Guthrie, but I like the odds there. Danny Duffy was better than Kevin Gausman, too. Though they are similar guys working as the long-men (big-time stuff), Duffy got better results with his this year. I'm not saying it's a huge gap. It's a small advantage... but in a 7-game series, small advantages can make big differences. Especially when a rotation starts getting shaken up.

I knew it would only take you about 2 seconds to chime in. You must think your rotation is full of 5 Jim Johnson's.
Most fans overvalue their teams, but you and Rusty (ISU) really take the cake in blind homerism

Let's look at it, position by position: C - Perez vs. Hundley/Joseph. Joseph has flashy numbers throwing out runners, but runners don't really challenge Perez, who is one of the best receivers in the game and is going to win another deserved Gold Glove. EDGE: KC (even with Wieters) 1B - Eric Hosmer vs. Steve Pearce. Hosmer is probably the best-throwing 1B in the AL now that Adrian Gonzalez is in LA, and he's great at scooping the ball. He also seems to have improved his positioning since last year, when he won a GG. Pearce is a good hitter but is not a great fielder. EDGE: KC 2B - Omar Infante vs. Jon Schoop. Infante is above-average, but Schoop has been a stud according to defensive metrics, saving nearly 20 runs (18). EDGE: BALTIMORE SS - Alcides Escobar vs. JJ Hardy. Hardy is a solid, reliable SS with average range for the position. Escobar has more range and a stronger arm but is a little less steady. I think this one basically is a wash. 3B - Mike Moustakas vs. Kelly Johnson. Kelly Johnson knows how to hold a glove and throw a baseball, and that's about all you can say about his defense. Moustakas is an above-average 3B. If Machado is healthy, this is no contest. But as is? EDGE: Royals LF - Alex Gordon vs. De Aza/Young. This isn't a contest. Alex Gordon demolishes all comers here. EDGE: Royals CF - Cain/Dyson vs. Adam Jones. Probably about a wash. Adam Jones is a very gifted CF, as is Cain/Dyson. WASH RF - Aoki/Cain vs. Markakis. When the Royals have Cain in RF, they're every bit as good at this spot as Baltimore. EDGE: Baltimore
