MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

I can't believe it's even debatable to Dorsey. Will it be tough to do? Of course it is, Smith is a stand up guy and deserves to be treated with respect. His play is not good enough and never will be. No team is perfect in today's game and the QB must be more capable than Smith is. Give Foles the gig next season and draft a damn young QB.

Foles sucks. He's a backuo, maybe.

Enough with the retreads. Why can't a rookie do what smith did this year? Hell, look at Prescott or any rookie qb this year.

Rookie qbs in shitty teams suck. Rookie qbs in good teams with good surroundings casts and support system don't suck.

I don't think Prescott would have done as well here and I also don't think Foles is that bad we can go just as far with him as Smith. If Romo doesn't get injured this team with him is a superbowl team. There's no rookie we can realistically draft next year that will take us to the Super Bowl next year (Im by no means opposed to drafting a QB next year)

So if we're gonna get bounced in the playoffs every year on this course, I'd rather suck -like we had to suck hard to get rid of Haley/Pioli and get on to building the next generation with an actual chance of winning. Brady's got maybe another two years left before he loses his skills (like Manning did). We'll be fighting Carr, Luck and Mariota over the next five years in the AFC.

Romo won't be playing in a cold stadium.

Denver has the better kind of cold. KC not so much.

Only reason to start Foles over a rookie in 2017 is to not throw the rookie to the dogs. Foles does not have enough high caliber starting experience that the rookie can watch and learn from.
I would either keep Smith and start the rookie in 2018 or I would start the rookie and have Foles as the backup.
Getting another proven retread like Romo whose passing numbers are significantly better than Smiths means this franchise has its sights on an AFCCG at least. So you need a good backup for the wheels to not completely fall off if (or rather when) Romo gets hurt, so I would go with Foles as the backup. Then what is the point of drafting a high round QB at all in 2017 to have him #3 on the depth chart?

As much as I would've liked Romo here, the 2017 version of him scares me. Too brittle and old. Just say no to Foles, the back up QB is always the most popular guy on the team when the team loses. And don't start with Geno.

No, because if that is the case the Foles should be ready to take over for Smith if we take your post as a truth.

Alex Smith isn't taking this team to the SB next year either - so we can either keep watering the tree, or do something to address the QB position for the future.

Everyone keeps bringing up the point that the last "X" AFCCG's have been some combination of Manning, Brady and Roethlisberger - but we're not even bothering to look at what is "behind us".

Carr, Mariota and Luck have the ability (not saying they will, but they could) to be the next generation's version - while we keep trying to get by with average QB play and hoping that the Defense and Special Teams bail us out week after week after week.
