Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

It's just a matter of opinion and wording. Reid thinks he is building the franchise around Smith and protecting him with a new younger more aggressive and yes cheaper OT. Plus, he gets another pick to help the team along.

It's all a matter of perspective. Everyone has a different view.

The interesting part of this to me is the additional cap room. What, if anything, do they do with it? If they sign some guys with the additional space, it makes this move much more tolerable.

Matt Cassel made the Pro Bowl.

Let's use the R2 pick we get from Miami to get him back.

They could make cap room by signing Albert to a long term deal.

Dolphins interested in Chiefs OT Albert, then could target CB in draft
April 17, 2013 8:24 pm ET

The Dolphins remain interested in trading for Chiefs tackle Branden Albert, and if completed would then likely target a cornerback with their first-round pick, according to league sources.

Miami is among the teams to discuss a deal with the Chiefs and continues to pursue that option, sources said, with the Chiefs seeking at least a second-round pick in return.

The Dolphins, while making a splash in free agency, have yet to replace the loss of left tackle Jake Long and top corner Sean Smith, and their priority is to do both, with acquiring a tackle now their goal, sources said. The team is very high on Alabama corner Dee Milliner, and he would be a prime target with the 12th overall pick if they can land Albert (Cleveland, with the sixth-overall pick, is looking hard at Milliner).

While this draft does have some alluring tackle prospects, the reality is Luke Joeckel will go first overall, sources said, and Eric Fisher will go in the top five. Miami is high on Oklahoma tackle Lane Johnson, who is rising, but if they can land Albert that would free them up, and Arizona and San Diego, picking ahead of the Dolphins, are also high on Johnson, sources said, and Alabama tackle DJ Fluker could also be selected before Miami picks.

If the Dolphins are able to complete a deal for Albert -- teams have been made aware by the Chiefs what Albert is looking for in compensation (he is currently on the franchise tag) -- and Milliner is gone before they pick, they also are among the teams very high on West Virginia receiver Tavon Austin, but he, too, is generating top-10 buzz. Austin might be there at 12, but teams are considering moving up to land him, and he is in play with the Jets picking ninth, as well.

The Dolphins are juggling all of these scenarios, but getting some certainty at tackle prior to the draft would allow them to focus more elsewhere, and their interest in Albert is very real.

The Chiefs are planning to draft a left tackle first overall, in Joeckel, so getting value for Albert is their priority.

But, but....his back!

If his back was a legitimate concern, they wouldn't have just guaranteed him $10M this year - in hopes that another team would ignore these supposed "back issues" and trade for him.

We should use Pro Bowls as an authority on production as much as CNN.

Anyone with a computer starting in week 8 and ending before the season is over can vote! Who thought, now that is a good idea?!

The amazing success the entire NFL has had building around another teams backup QB might give you an idea why people don't like this...

Meh, if they're determined to take Joeckel at 1, trade Albert and move on.

However, is it wrong to expect Joeckel to be a top 5 LT by atleast year 2?

I don't think it's wrong to expect that.

He damn well better be.

It's comical to me that they have no problem spending $9M a season on a bottom-third, game manager QB, but refuse to pay market value for a Top 8-10 LT.

When did Alex Smith come in here demanding big money?

I didn't like the compensation we gave up to get him, but that's the going rate these days for a QB, especially when the worst QB class in years is happening.
